Can Mourinho beat Van Gaal to become king of Europe?

The Champions League final - a guts-and-glory game to decide who is the continent's greatest football team - is nigh, and this year's edition, to be played in Madrid's Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, has all the ingredients needed for a classic tussle.

The showdown between Jose Mourinho and Louis Van Gaal is now set for the Champions League final (Getty Images).
The showdown between Jose Mourinho and Louis Van Gaal is now set for the Champions League final (Getty Images).

In one corner, the blue and blacks of Jose Mourinho's Inter Milan side, champions of Italy and conquerors of reigning champions Barcelona. In the other corner, the read and whites of the newly crowned champions of Germany, Bayern Munich. Led by the dominating figure of Louis Van Gaal, the Bavarian giants boast an array of talents that have them back in the race for the continental crown for the first time in nine years.

Inter too have much to feel pleased about. Mourinho has never been backwards about coming forwards, especially when telling the world about his achievements, but the diminutive Portuguese coach has taken great pride in getting his side this far.

This is a man who - despite having never played at the top level - has turned three different clubs in three different countries into champions (Porto in Portugal, Chelsea in England and Inter Milan in Italy), not to mention capturing the UEFA Cup and the Champions League title.

Passionate and always provocative, the 47-year-old has become synonymous with success, so could the current form of his side see him once again crowned king of Europe?

Can Jose Mourinho become king of Europe?

The football played by his Inter side has not always displayed the aesthetic beauty or the artistry of the Barcelona team he helped to defeat. But Mourinho showed, as he did previously with Porto in 2004, that a team galvanized by strength of purpose and collective will can overcome even the awesome talents of Lionel Messi, Xavi and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Inter triumphed in front of 95,000 baying fans at the Camp Nou, which for a man who once worked at the club under Van Gaal was a victory to be savored.

The scene is set then for a scintillating final come May 22, when Bayern will aim to clinch their fifth European title and Inter will look to win their first final for 38 years. Two teams with a rich array of talent will lock horns in a fight that will captivate fans around the world, the battle will also pitch two coaches of vast experience against one another.

In Louis Van Gaal, Bayern have a coach who admits to "arrogance," has great tactical insight and fears absolutely no-one. And why should he? His clinched both the domestic title and cup and proved more than well-equipped for the challenge posed by United in the quarterfinals.

Van Gaal too has a career rich in silverware. The 58-year-old is a multiple champion (having previously taken Ajax and AZ Alkmaar to the Eredivisie title in Holland before clinching titles with Barcelona in Spain), not to mention having won both the UEFA Cup and Champions League in the 1990s.

The Dutchman also has coached his national side and is familiar with the pressures of managing an aggressive press and big egos; Mourinho, while familiar with the latter, has yet to test his mettle at such level. Van Gaal has been there, seen it and done it - and more importantly, he wants to do it again.

The Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid is a stage befitting the magnitude of the 2010 final of the Champions League, but it is hard to call which colossus of the game will emerge victorious from the gladiatorial battle.

I can confirm Van Gaal is indeed known as an arrogant man in the Netherlands. And yes, he likes to fight the press, a famous statement to a journalist in the Netherlands:
"Are you that dumb, or I am that smart?"

Vamos Mourinho! The portuguese man-o-war will prove again that although his style at times is of the most boring standard seen today in football, with a similar style to Greece's pathetic victory in the Euro2004, it is super efficient, super tactical and at times, brilliant to watch! In this years final, to be fair, both Teams have their weapons and their arrogance and their coldness, so its going to be a really uncertain final, that will probably be decided in the 1st 30mins of the match! Cant wait!!

I m sure young generation players see him as a father whilst others feel like friend. friendship makes a team successful not merely quality of the individuals as opposite of Real Madrid.Inter players fought for him last night.Go Mourinho go!

Defence wins championships. Bayern goalie and defence are inferior to those of Inter. Bayern plays football, Inter plays for result. So all inall unfortunately for Van Gaal his chances are quite slim. 1:0 or 2:1 for Inter.

Louis van gaal is a fantastic caoch & good tactician no doubt,he is one of the best caoches in europe and has silenced his critics by toping the german bundeslinga and reaching the champions league final with his Bayern team.Jose mourinho is also a world class coach, equally good with tactical play but less experienced.I expect the game between Bayern and Inter Milan to be explosive in both tactics and antics but i strongly believe Jose mourinho would prevail becuase he has something "special to offer" as always.
I hope Arsenger Wenger would learn a thing or two from these two great coaches and stop causing arsenal so much pain.

Both coaches have great credentials. It comes to down to players on match day and who wants it more on on the pitch. Without the prowess of Ribery, and the killer instincts of Eto'o on a big stage will prove decisive. Inter Milan have the edge.

However, I'm leaning more towards Inter.. they've been waiting for this for 38 years, they have rock-solid defense and an amazing goalie (did you see Julio Cesar's save in the second leg? amazing!) and I highly doubt Mou will let Inter get this far without winning anything. Bayern will be missing Ribery.. oh and there's always Eto'o. Hmm. Again, very tough call..

No doubt that Mourinho will start the final with a smart trick. However, if this trick does not result in a fast goal, then Van Gaal can adapt his team so that they can overcome the trick. There are not many coaches who can "read" the game and make the necessary changes. Van Gaal is one of them and Mourinho is not. Hence: whatever Mourinho comes up with, if it does not have a quick result, then it looses its effect and will Van Gaal win the game since he is the better game coach. Therefore, the first 20 minutes will be decisive.

Mourinho is a psuchologist and a tactician. He knows how to get his team mentally fit for the game and how to approach the other team. He reads the games and determines his team based on the result he wants. Bayern will attack and attack and, remember that they are physically fit; Inter will attack and defend and a little but of frustration by Bayern will cost them dear. The game will be close. I predict a 1-0 or 2-1 win for Inter Milan.

It's not a question of Mourinho or Van Gaal... The point is that Inter is incredible superior. Bayern defence is a joke, particoulary central defenders are as fast as bricks. Facing Rtoo and Milito they have not a chance on a million. Bayern got to final due a referee mistake (vs Fiorentina) and an incredible amount of luck. The point is not to determine if Inter will win but to determine if it's gonna be a 4-0 or a 6-0...

Mourinho and Van Gaal are both excellent coaches, the one isn't better than the other. But in the end the coach doens't make the difference, the players do. And Bayern is the better side, they have more quality players. Normally they will win on the 22th may.

why why all the noise about Mourinho wining or not wining the champions league. There is noting fantanstic about it. Inter played a style that escaped them narrowly from barca defeat and this does imply inter is better than barca. Inter played barca with their hearth in their mouth. The final will will be 50-50.

Mourinho is pure entertainment. His record speaks for itself. If he wins the final I bet he will be at Real Madrid next season... and win it there too within a couple of years. I can see it happening. I just hope he then 'retires' into the job of national coach for Portugal and win us a cup – I'll settle for the European Cup – must remain realistic, although I guess Mourinho will aim for World Cup glory! The sky is the limit for this guy...

Both teams are pretty good side from performance so far, but am sure none of the teams will win on a platter of gold, hence they much work hard for success come May 22.
however with respect to "Inter" resilience performance it is rational to predict successful for Jose Mourinho team- note predictions don't win football game, but quality play does.

Inter versus Bayern finals is a game hard to predict. Both sides are well matched and have come up to the finals the hard way. Playing Eleven against Eleven leaves no team with any serious advantage. Red Card recepient Ribery may not be in the playing eleven but in Hamit Altintop Bayern has a hardworking, quick thinking and fasting moving replacement for the suspended Frenchman.

Players and Referee should see that the game does not become a Ten versus Eleven affair. If reduced to Ten, Mourinho has plan B and Plan A for such eventualities. The Special One could start with Plan C. He has defenders who can defeat rival attackers. Dutchman Louis van Gaal will also have his plans. Let's wait and watch to enjoy the strategies and counter strategies from two of football's most decorated and discussed generals.

Best wishes to players and fans of Inter and Bayern.

Bayern will win the game. Probably the only top club in Europe with NO debt, actually making profit for years now. Sustainable development, intelligent transfers, a great stadium and a solid fan-base. This is the way to go in the future. Nobody wants to see clubs like Real or Inter, owned by some guy playing for the enjoyment of few. The next couple of years will see the Bundesliga as the strongest league in Europe, if appropriate marketing is undertaken. Spanish and Italian clubs are highly indebted, English ones are alienating and heartless. I am so proud of the healthy economic development of the German league. Brand new stadiums, sold out to capacity each weekend, featuring exciting matches between at least 5-6 german player per squad. Look at Bayern: Badstuber, Müller, Contento, Lahm and Schweinsteiger are home-grown players! Then again Inter...not worth mentioning. Any home-growns? Yeah right... Auf geht's Bayern!

In my last comment on who will qualify between Barca and Inter at the Semi-final stage, I gave it to the 'Special One'. This time, the 'Special One' will win the Championship and record a trebile in the history of Inter. To qualify at the expense of Barca was as good as wiining the trophy. The Inter team will crush the 'German Machine' because Inter combines European and South American styles, solid midfield and defence plus clinical finishers, Milito, Eto'o, Micon, Barlatolli etc. Mayern relies on counters and with Inter, the task could be herculean. 2010 is the year of treble for the 'Special One'.

Van Gaal! He deserves it more. All his teams he coached played attractive football with clear philosophy. I like that. This is much harder to achieve than the tactics used by Mourinho with his teams. I admire Mourinho, but the philosphy of Van Gaal is more convincing/attractive.

Everybody remembers Ajax in the two consecutive Champions League finals in 1995 and 1996, because of their way of playing football. Almost nobody will remember Porto in 2004.

Kike now...Everybody will remember Bayern and not Inter. Sorry Guys... Van Gaal deserves it more...

Inter will win not because of luck ;like bayern against man u.; but because there were made a warring team by a great manager with a strong fighting spirit for only the violent in spirit possess the kingdom as Jesus said, only the violent in spirit overcomes any obstacle ; that's why inter will prevail against bayern munich.

I wept when Morinho leave Chelsea, now He has come back to harm us as He promised, I know He is a winner and no one can stop Him, not even Van Gaal.

i think Jose Mourinho is all time better then Van Gaal, Fabio Cappelo is the another choice between both of them, i like Mourinho as he is the best coach.
