I have finally been able to catch my breath after what was a dramatic Champions League final weekend in Munich, which capped off an exciting finish to the European club campaign.

Before we all get into Euro 2012 mode, I wanted to look back at the season that was and pick out the star performers. Below is my list of the most valuable players in each of the top four leagues.

Spain

1. Cristiano Ronaldo (center) – He led Real Madrid to their first title in four years and he did it in style, scoring some spectacular goals. He finished the season with 46 goals and 12 assists, but you can’t use just numbers to describe the influence he had on Los Blancos. He was the heart and soul of the title-winning side and out-performed Messi in the key game between the two sides at the Camp Nou in April.

2. Lionel Messi (left) – A record 50 goals in La Liga for the Argentine phenomenon, who was once again sublime. We are running out of adjectives to describe the 24-year-old, who continues to get better and better. Messi loses out to Ronaldo because Barcelona lost out to Real Madrid.

3. Radamel Falcao (right) – The best pure striker in the world as far as I am concerned. He is a cross between Ivan Zamorano, Hugo Sanchez and Gabriel Batistuta. "El Tigre" can score from anywhere and he singlehandedly kept Atletico Madrid in the hunt for a Champions League spot. If it weren’t for the Colombian and his 24 league goals, Los Colchoneros would have struggled to finish in the top half.

England

1. Yaya Toure (center) – Manchester City would not have won the Premier League title without the Ivory Coast international. No chance. Even if you forget the two vital goals he scored in the penultimate game against Newcastle, his presence was decisive during his side’s title run. Yaya is the kind of player you can count on when a game is on the line. He always knows what to do with the ball and his experience and class make him one of the top midfielders on the planet.

2. Robin Van Persie (left) – Arsenal should do everything and more to keep RVP at the club. Pay him whatever he wants, give him a title of Sir or Lord, because without him the London club would have been a mediocre mid-table side this season. Arsene Wenger has to build a team around the Dutchman, even if he is about to turn 30. Van Persie played every Premier League game this season and scored 30 goals. Arsenal desperately need him to stay.

3. Sergio Aguero (right) – His fantastic strike in the final seconds of the campaign clinched Manchester City's first title in 44 years, and that alone would have been good enough for him to be in contention for Player of the Season award. However, the Argentine did so much more in his first year in England. He was a constant threat to every defense in the league and opened spaces for his fellow strikers to shine.

Germany

1. Robert Lewandowski (center) – Probably the best Polish forward since the legendary Zbigniew Boniek. Lewandowski has proven in the last two seasons that he is among the best finishers in the world, winning consecutive league titles with Borussia Dortmund. At 23, the sky is the limit for this talented front man. He scored the only goal in the huge Bundesliga clash with Bayern in April and netted a hat-trick against the Bavarians in the German Cup final.

2. Marco Reus (left) – He is fast, he is skilful and he has an eye for goal. Reus is one of the most exciting prospects in German football and he has just earned a big-money move to Dortmund. Don’t expect fans of Monchengladach to be bitter. Reus’ 18 league goals led them to fourth place and a chance to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

3. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (right) – After disappointing stints with Real Madrid and AC Milan, “The Hunter” has once again confirmed his goalscoring credentials at Schalke 04. The Dutchman netted 29 goals in the Bundesliga this season, helping his side finish third in the table.

Italy

1. Andrea Pirlo (center) Like fine wine, the midfielder gets better with age. He was picked up for free by Juventus from Milan and marshaled the midfield with superb class and style. Pirlo led Serie A in assists, with 13, and was the main reason why the Old Lady lifted the Scudetto for the first time since 2003.

2. Claudio Marchisio (left) – After being farmed out for a couple of years, Marchisio finally became the player Juventus always hoped he would be. His nine goals were second best in the team and he added skill and speed to a midfield which already had style (Pirlo) and grit (Arturo Vidal).

3. Sebastian Giovinco (right) – I could have picked Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who scored 28 league goals, but since Milan failed to win the Scudetto, I have gone for the diminutive Parma forward. The former Juve youngster has come good at the Enio Tardini and finished the season in double figures in goals and assists. Look out for him to make a move to a big club in Europe this summer.

Messi. End of Story :)

Abiola   May 22nd, 2012 6:53 pm ET

Ronaldo is favourity 4 word best dis season

Charles   May 22nd, 2012 8:25 pm ET

Messi is number one in the world. Three titles already secured this season and an additional one coming on the 25th. Ronaldo is good and hard working, but messi is better and has more natural football skills. In my opinion, Messi will still retain the world player of the year.

THA   May 22nd, 2012 9:01 pm ET

Messi loses out to Ronaldo because Barcelona lost to Madrid? Really? That's absurd. How about all the times Barcelona thrashed Madrid? Madrid just defeated Barcelona; Barcelona have humiliated them on countless occasions in the recent past. Considering Messi's records, and his spirit on the field, Ronaldo doesn't even come close to his level of awesomeness. I used to be a CR7 fan, but then I saw class, commitment, humility and pure talent in Messi- something I have never seen before in any player. Messi>>>>>>>>Ronaldo.

Bader   May 22nd, 2012 9:35 pm ET

definitely Messi

some dude   May 22nd, 2012 9:40 pm ET

Who made this list? After Spain he seems to have run out of ... well, i don't know what.

Xainu   May 22nd, 2012 9:50 pm ET

respect for all good players but there is no one like Messi.

markogb   May 22nd, 2012 11:04 pm ET

Messi Messi Meeeesssssi

vispond   May 22nd, 2012 11:20 pm ET

From one Portuguese to another Portuguese...right Pinto?

Grecian   May 22nd, 2012 11:24 pm ET

Messi not #1? You dumb

Kobina   May 22nd, 2012 11:27 pm ET

Ronaldo trumps Messi this time round. Messi has been hugely favoured in times past because he's pure talent and class but let's face it, this season he's been a bit jaded. Who won't be? Playing four seasons in a row without any major injuries and only little vacation. The number of goals are misleading as it's converges on few games that he scored 3,4,5 etc. he also went on scoreless streaks and getting to the latter end of the campaign, as Barca lost hope of catching up on Madrid, they started playing for only him to score. Racking up 2/3rds of Barca's goals is a terrible statistics for a team but great personal achievements.

Ronaldo on the other hand, scored against EVERY La Liga team this season, a record in La Liga season and led the goal king chart till late in the season when Barca concentrated their efforts on Messi winning the pichichi. Madrid could have done same but like Ronaldo said, he's won it before so won't want to win it at all cost to the detriment of the team. Ronaldo deserves to be number 1 this season. He's earned it.

Araz   May 23rd, 2012 12:06 am ET

Pedro Pinto, stop portugese propoganda. Lionel is the best. also please report number of assists that Messi made. But Ronaldo is also an excellent player but just that Messi is mercurial, voila!

chidiebere   May 23rd, 2012 12:16 am ET

messi is good but Ronaldo is better this time, and has shown more hunger for it.

jerJoE   May 23rd, 2012 12:16 am ET

I love footbal. I follow La Liga, Premiet League, Serie A and Bundesliga and what Messi does cannot be compare. CR7 is the fastest player dribling, he runs really fast, and is phyzically superior to Messi. However Messi is better becaue not been so pysically gifted he plays REAL FOOTBALL he plays for a TEAM. This little guy makes ANYONE to look great with what he does. Again, I just love football...

Francineudo   May 23rd, 2012 12:27 am ET

o melhor é messi.

Stephen Kelly   May 23rd, 2012 12:44 am ET

C'mon, there's Messi, then a big gap, then everyone else with CR7 at the front of the pack.

Stainless Figueiredo   May 23rd, 2012 1:01 am ET

Lady's and gentleman's welcome to messi world, pure, simple and 100% best football ever...

Ania   May 23rd, 2012 1:26 am ET

Nice to see Robert Lewandowski recognized, he's got an amazing future ahead!

Teddy   May 23rd, 2012 1:28 am ET

Pedro Pinto must not be much of a Serie A fan. I can't claim to know Bundesliga players well, but I am well acquainted with Serie A. Pirlo is a quality player going through a false second spring. Juventus didn't play in Europe this year, and the long rests were kind to his fragile health. He will be exposed for the butterfly he is next campaign. Marchisio is a solid player, but certainly not in the realm of MVP conversation for a league. Lavezzi for Napoli was clearly the difference maker for that side; when he was on the pitch Napoli's goal average went up dramatically. Cavani was equally brilliant as a clinical finisher; their chemistry together (and Lavezzi's injury difficulties) were the prime difference makers as to where they finished on the table. Di Natale is the heart of the Udinese attack, and has been so for years. KP Boateng at Milan was a huge difference maker when on the pitch; perhaps not enough to be considered an MVP on the list, but certainly more influential than Marchisio. I mean, c'mon: Mr. Pinto mention names like a juventino fanboy or someone who only watches Serie A when Juventus plays, but he left out Vidal and Chiellini.

Ben   May 23rd, 2012 1:46 am ET

who scored record high 50 goals in La Liga this season ??? Who scored record high 72 goals this season in all competition ??? Who has won three consecutive Ballons d'Or. Who has won FIFA World Player of the Year award??? Who has won UEFA Best Player in Europe Award??? It is foolish to compare Messi with anyone in the soccer world. Messi, Messi, Messi !!!

Acydo   May 23rd, 2012 2:29 am ET

Messi plays, beatiful, elegant, creative football. Messi gives us fans great, sublime spectacle. Let the rest, great playes, compete among themselves. Messi plays, he does not compete.

Paulo Da Silva   May 23rd, 2012 5:08 am ET

i don't even see the point on debating on this topic! so lets just enjoy the beautiful game than debating which player is better than the other!

sunil   May 23rd, 2012 7:34 am ET

Messi loses out to Ronaldo because Barcelona lost to Madrid? if the only game defins a level of player like messi then watch previous matches then u'll know who have done extremly well in big matchess. In this season also messi is in a presure to handle all the strike force of BArca due to lack of effective counter part but also he has done it with 72 goals in all compitation which is much more higher then the goal scored by the other barca players. Wining trouphy is result of a team in which Real Madrid beat Barca this season but if we have to compare individual player then i didn't see any confusion coz MESSI has proven himself as he is the BEST OF THE BEST.

dragon   May 23rd, 2012 9:20 am ET

Ronaldo>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Messi

kayode   May 23rd, 2012 9:32 am ET

definitely Messi!!!

kenyan   May 23rd, 2012 9:36 am ET

chritiano!!!!!!!!!

george   May 23rd, 2012 9:59 am ET

Messi is second to none in soccer!!!. Period.

shushan   May 23rd, 2012 10:56 am ET

one la liga and already the best in the world? better than messi? well players of man city made the history, how about them then? i think messi is artistic, intelligent, the impact he has in the game is second to none, ronaldo is more about power, that's all. i still don't know why pinto is advocating all the time for ronaldo, patriotism? hopefully they will accept this comment...unlike last time..

isaac   May 23rd, 2012 11:36 am ET

Ronaldo is the best in the world. It does not matter the number of goals, assists etc that a player has but whether all that resulted in a major throphy."

Ronaldo more than helped R.M win the la liga this season and even in the crucial game at the Bernabeu,he outshined Messi and scored.

Ronaldo Ronaldo Ronaldo. If there is any justice in football, then CR will be the BEST IN THE WORLD.

Paul Joahm   May 23rd, 2012 11:45 am ET

I totally agree with this picks!

Top 2012 best players in the world:

1 – Cristiano Ronaldo (Golden Ball – deserves it)
2 – Lionel Messi (Great season but didn't any major trophy)
3 – Yaya Toure
5 – Falcao
4 – Van Persie

Horacio   May 23rd, 2012 11:59 am ET

These are players recognized for their contribution to their teams so Ronaldo must win since he finished ahead of Messi. Messi may be a better player overall, but last season Ronaldo was the most influential in Real's title winning side.

pedro   May 23rd, 2012 12:32 pm ET

& what about portugal?...
=:-(

poret   May 23rd, 2012 12:32 pm ET

surely Van Persie, he had an excellent form last season scoring 30 premier league gaol.

Italy1976   May 23rd, 2012 12:57 pm ET

Undoubtably Messi is the most natural gifted player on earth, but for me Ronaldo is the best player in the world, for the simple reason that he has proven to be a champion in another major league (Premier League) as well, winning everything there is to win...i would like to see Messi play in another league (different speed, team tactics, defense etc) and see if he can reach the same level as in Barcelona...

GABRIEL GANA   May 23rd, 2012 1:30 pm ET

1 Cristiano Ronaldo
2 van persie.
3. messi
4. yahaya toure
5 Falcao

Jose fernandez   May 23rd, 2012 1:34 pm ET

Ronaldo is the best, do any one knows that messi is a big zero wen it comes in the air. Messi is good only for himsel but Ronaldo is not selfish so CR7 best in world

Onama Charles Balli   May 23rd, 2012 2:13 pm ET

Robin Van Persie is the best all time striker who brought Arsenal from a poor start of the 2011/2012 season to third position

O. UMONDAK   May 23rd, 2012 3:26 pm ET

Ronaldo is very good but is only unlucky to exist at the same time as MESSI. Messi is just too good. Even if Maradona was playing at this time , Messi would still have been better.

Yinka   May 23rd, 2012 4:42 pm ET

Messi is a great ftballer but cr7 just deserve to win world best, cos he proved it this season.

jsmith   May 23rd, 2012 4:59 pm ET

Ronaldo is the best player in the world. I have seen a Ronaldo as Sporting crack, Man United champion, Real Madrid champion! Excelent performances, different teams, different countries. What about Messi ?? Iniesta and Xavi working hard to serve the dwarf... it easy that way... Ronaldo push all the team !

gary   May 23rd, 2012 5:21 pm ET

72 goals 14 champion league goals 50 lali goals 5 in a champion league game lead his team in assist all are record 3 titles an a possible 4 might not b significant but if this cant convince u then there is noting he can do that will

Mickey   May 23rd, 2012 5:31 pm ET

Definitely Messi. All this talk about not winning la Liga means nothing, because before la Liga Messi has already won 3 trophies this season, and is waiting for the 4th one. If Barca wins Copa del Rey, what will Mr. have to say then, because both players played in that competition. What I think is that RM meant the la Liga so much that they intentionally dropped the King's Cup to concentrate. Surely, in real footballing sense, I think the man who single handedly carried his team when it became clear that all other players were fatigued for playing too many games was Messi. He made more assists and scored more goals than CR. Simply Messi.

gasper   May 23rd, 2012 7:03 pm ET

who is Ronaldo to messi, cup or no cup is always messi

Jõao   May 23rd, 2012 7:03 pm ET

1-Ronaldo
2-Falcao
3-Hulk

BEST TEAM IN WORLD FC PORTO

damian   May 23rd, 2012 7:08 pm ET

Ronaldo is the best he deserve it.

samy   May 23rd, 2012 7:18 pm ET

Some guys arguing that messi scored more goals than ronaldo and messi should win baloon d'or this season too... I ask all of you to look into last year wherein cr7 outscored messi but it was argued that his goals counted for nothing. So, this time around cristiano ronaldo deserves it as messi did nothing in important matches of CL/La liga and scored useless goals after the title is decided. CR7 all the way! Moreover, CR7 scored every opposition in la liga this year. A feat never achieved by anyone so far

alehandro   May 23rd, 2012 9:10 pm ET

Messi or Ronaldo. Pepsi or Coke. It all comes down to personal taste. Both were sensational, but this season Ronaldo shaded it because he was a winner and that's why the play he game. Just one
other comment concerning a player who wasn't among the top 3 in his league according to the author. Vincent Kompany was the primary reason that Man. City won the Premier League. He stopped goals, he scored goals, he marshaled the troops, and his presence was the foundation on which many of City's successes were built. I know defenders usually play second fiddle to the glamor boys up front, but the Belgian is much more than just a stopper and for me would be near the top of any list purporting to highlight the men of the season.

cigge   May 24th, 2012 12:12 am ET

Ronaldo is best

cigge   May 24th, 2012 12:19 am ET

1 CR
2 RVP
3 Messi
4 Falcao
5 Yaya Toure

Jake   May 24th, 2012 1:44 am ET

Messi is still the best. the fact that Barcelona lost the second el classico is nothing. Do you recall Barcelona also beat them in the first run. mess is and will forever be ahead of c ronaldo. keep it up angel Messi

Dr. Cajetan Coelho   May 24th, 2012 5:50 am ET

Messi, Ronaldo and Vincent Kompany

Niamatullah'Ghousi'   May 24th, 2012 6:31 am ET

In all over the world Messi is the top and all time record breaker.

Archie Plinger   May 24th, 2012 7:31 am ET

"Messi loses out to Ronaldo because Barcelona lost out to Real Madrid". What Pinto really means is Messi loses out to Ronaldo because Messi is Argentinian and Ronaldo is Portuguese!

Rasta   May 24th, 2012 8:09 am ET

Wat a blind argumennt from ONE-EYED people..Wit all due respect.. Ronaldo is good, but it is quiet unfortunate that he exist thesame time as Messi.. U cannot compare a 4 cylinder engine 2 a V-8 or V-12.. U first have 2 compare Ronaldo 2d likes of Iniesta, Aguero, Falcao, Tevez b4 u talk about MESSI. Such comparism is an insult of d highest order 2 Messi. He outclasses Ronaldo!!! Can Ronaldo dribble past 5 players & a keeper b4 scoring?? ASK URSELVES..Messi does things Ronaldo does, but ROnaldo cannot do wat MESSI does..To all those dreamers wake up & stop betraying ur conscience.. U can promote Ronaldo cos u r his fans..But reality is miles away from u..GEt delivered from ur illusions... Welldone Messi.

jsmith   May 24th, 2012 9:40 am ET

1 – Ronaldo (Champion)
2 – Falcao (Europa League)
3 – Drogba (Champions league)

where are the messi's titles ?? ops...

Stop this madness   May 24th, 2012 11:23 am ET

Messi is better than Ronaldo Q.E.D.

jsmith   May 24th, 2012 12:17 pm ET

Ronaldo is the best player in the world.
But Falcao is very good as well.

donadoni   May 24th, 2012 12:57 pm ET

anything you write against ronaldo and for messi, pedro pinto will not accept or publish it, for the third time, they have not accepted my comments, no democracy? i used to watch his sports program, but no more.....

HAHA   May 24th, 2012 2:47 pm ET

You know what pedro, maybe kobe isn't the best because lakers won't win it this year. Maybe Bolt isn't the best because of the DQ at the world champions. I absolutely understand you're logic Pinto. You're analyses never fail to raise the hair on the back of my neck.

HAHA   May 24th, 2012 3:00 pm ET

I will admit that you aren't the only one Pedro.... football fans do use weird logic...

JohnO   May 24th, 2012 5:19 pm ET

Furthermore, how can put Ronaldo above Messi when you state: "Most valuable players".
Just the fact that Messi scores 50 in la liga and 72 in overall competitions, makes him already surpass Ronaldo...

mahmoud   May 24th, 2012 5:28 pm ET

pinto you can compare aguero with van persie but not ronaldo with messi they both have different style however now messi is better

Tony Fantillo   May 24th, 2012 6:25 pm ET

Messi without any question...you have to look at the whole person not just the ability to score which he has...Messi is selfless, is a team player and is the ultimate finisher...Ronaldo has the skills but is short on a balanced temper and plays his "prima donna" card far too frequently...there you have it...messi all the way!

Tony Fantillo   May 24th, 2012 6:29 pm ET

As for the others, one would have to judge and compare them by the position they play, ie strikers for strikers; midfielders, defenders and goalkeepers...

paul   May 24th, 2012 7:38 pm ET

Ronaldo and Messi are great players. They understand the game. Messi won almost all the titles in the world. Ronaldo cries when he did get a al. I was shocked when he said he was better than Messi. Is it because Real Madrid won La Liga this year? Messi is the best. Ronaldo needs to stop promoting himself.

paul   May 24th, 2012 7:54 pm ET

Messi is only 24. Ronaldo is 27. Messi won many trophies than Ronaldo. Is it because Ronaldo won La Liga this year ? Ronaldo IS NOT THE BEST. He needs to shut up and play better to reach where Messi is.I heard that comment from Real Madrid'S coach that Ronaldo was better than Messi. What is going on in the heads of JOSE M and CR7???? Messi will always sleep upstairs while Ronaldo sleeps in the basement.

soares   May 24th, 2012 8:16 pm ET

messi 100%

byford   May 25th, 2012 9:34 am ET

messi and barcelona are boring... i prefer action! ronaldo and madrid are top! much better

Ekies   May 25th, 2012 12:16 pm ET

Well to you have to take a good look at some of these players listed here they don't perform when it matters most...but players like the Deadly DD.(DROGBA) are players you can always rely on when ever they are on the pitch playing. both in big games or small teams though he might not have the skills but he will always trouble any defense and he will never stop scoring.

Funke   May 25th, 2012 2:17 pm ET

It is ronaldo. I love his style

Carlos   May 25th, 2012 3:10 pm ET

Messi is still better. Beyond technical ability where they are close but Ronaldo lacks the magic Messi has, the play attitude factor is definitive. Messi plays for the team to win and Ronaldo plays for the camera, lives for the camera.

Carlos   May 25th, 2012 3:15 pm ET

Real Madrid's championship is mainly Mourinho's achievement, not Ronaldo's. Player level, Messi is still better, and it will stay like that the more wow Ronaldo tries to look.

Carlos   May 25th, 2012 3:20 pm ET

And sure, they will probably give Ronaldo the best player award, but it will be only to balance things up, to make them more interesting.

FXS   May 25th, 2012 8:09 pm ET

Thanks to all those who really understand soccer and quality player attributes. You have proven that CNN has gotten Spain's #1 and #2 in the wrong order.

Clara   May 26th, 2012 7:20 am ET

No objectivity Mr. Pinto, what a pity. Do you even try?
Those who love football, like football and understand football choose MESSI.

Munyuki Manatsa   May 26th, 2012 10:58 am ET

I am for Christiano and Yaya

Alfred   May 26th, 2012 3:17 pm ET

Yiu want to compare Ronaldo to Messi?? Noooo... your not supposed to be here, go to a football school and learn football. Messi is uncomparable. A BIG FULL STOP.

humblelion. Nigeria   May 26th, 2012 5:07 pm ET

Between the three contenders in the Barclay's premiere league, the most outstanding player there is Robin van Persie,He showed great skills you cant find anywhere in the league.Beter than Yaya, or Aguero.

B. sumo   May 26th, 2012 5:15 pm ET

I love Messi and Ronaldo, really messi is the best.

Lawrence   May 26th, 2012 5:21 pm ET

If the fact that Ronaldo scored the decisive goal against Barca which helped real win La Liga makes him better than Messi, then Drogba is the worlds best this season because he scored all the decisive goals that helped Chelsea become champions of Europe for the first time! You can't judge by just one game, you have to look at the entire season wholistically, Messi won four trophies this season to Ronaldo's one and he broke all scoring records ever set. Please, Ronaldo's good but if I were a football coach, I'd rather have Messi in my team. The young man is everything you want in a footballer, plus he makes a great role model because of his humble disposition. Messi's the best, by miles!

Docchiro99   May 26th, 2012 5:43 pm ET

I feel that Messi is a more complete player because he always attempt to assist other in scoring whereas CR7 hardly assiist anyone to score as he prefer to score all the goal himself. When Messi score a goal, he raise his hands to salute the greater power of the universe whereas CR7 shows his muscle power by pointing at his quadriceps or he punches his pectoral muscles to describe how great he has been in scoring a goal. He brag too much about himself and he lacks humility. He must learn from Messi how to be humble. Messi is a player from a different planet and we should not even bother to make any comparison between them. By the way Mr. Pinto, why did you not mention the number os assist Messi accomplished as you did for CR7?

Ike   May 26th, 2012 10:18 pm ET

Messi came from the Heavens, Cristiano Ronaldo from Portugal. Messi is #1, Ronaldo is perhaps #2!

Amanuel Babu   May 27th, 2012 4:54 am ET

C.Ronaldo must work hard to be on the same level with MESSI.This is absolute reality!

Leonardinho_5   May 27th, 2012 10:54 am ET

You haven't listed any defenders or goalkeepers and very few midfielders; would Messi be able to perform so well without Xavi's oversight and excellent passes? I don't think so. If you are really going to indulge in this kind of hypothetical tomfoolery, Pinto, select a full team based on MVP criteria and you may be surprised at the result. The dynamics are in the teamwork. Strikers more often than not rely on team members to set them up with scoring chances. Goals are exhilirating and sometimes executed with the kind of artistic flair one would expect of a Falcao, but it should not distract from the fact that it takes a lot of players to move the ball from one goalpost to the other. And there is a last man standing that face bullets coming at him at 36 m/s, often with a wicked spin that makes it difficult to judge it's flight path. Strikers alone don't win matches.

Dma   May 27th, 2012 3:18 pm ET

You put Giovinco on the list for Italy and not Cavani? Why not learn something about European soccer before commenting on it. Stick to your Red Bulls-

frank   May 27th, 2012 3:18 pm ET

To be frank, if CHRISTIANO RONALDO does not win this year's Best World Player Award then there is nothing meritorious on this planet of ours. He actually beat Messi to the award when He singlehandedly marshaled all the forces in REAL MADRID to defeat super Barcelona in the Laliga decider. He more than Deserves the CROWN this year. No C- RONALDO no Best World Player Award this year.

Dmalify   May 27th, 2012 4:49 pm ET

1. Messi
2. CR-7
3. Falcao

England you totally messed up:

bunklesbaby   May 27th, 2012 6:01 pm ET

To be forthright Messi has an edge over Ronaldo as far as events unfolded in the recently concluded season

tenor   May 27th, 2012 10:47 pm ET

well Mr Pedro, i always love reading your article. but when it comes down to MESSI – RONALDO, you always slightly favour your countryman. I find it bit ridiculous, considering your status and calibre. Messi is Messi, he can not be compared to any other player. Please do not tarnish your status by being bias.

well, pedro pinto the same guy who said city will not win the premiere league, how come they won it now,, correct your thoughts mate, messi is the thing now

andy   May 28th, 2012 4:49 pm ET

is obvious that football fans will like to acknowledge who they favor in sporting activities.. but if we will ever compare CR-7 N MESSI we are doing justice to football..I like CR-7 because he's outstanding, consistent n determined but unlike MESSI his success story is FIVE consecutive years he's meant to rule the soccer arena!! CR-7 is good but MESSI is better n awesome!!! WORLD BEST FOR THE FORTH TIME messi..

Mark Biram   May 28th, 2012 5:18 pm ET

messi is the best player in the world by a country mile. ronaldo will do nothing at the euros again.

deFacto   May 28th, 2012 8:51 pm ET

Why has Messi run out to Ronaldo, because Barca came second in the league after Real?

What about winning the FIFA World Cup?
(Real can't even qualify for this tournament)

World Champions = Barca
European Champions = Chelsea
Spanish Champions = Real (defeating & LOSING to Barca)
Spanish Cup (Copa del Rey) = Barca (defeating Real)
UEFA Super Cup Winners = Barca
Spanish Super Cup Winners = Barca (defeating Real)

or

Barca won 4 out og 6 possible tournamens this season
Real won 1 out of 5 possible tournaments this season

&

Messi has set a new world record for scoring the most goals in a season = 73 + a new record in La lIga = 50

Cameo   May 28th, 2012 8:54 pm ET

Barca has in this season also won the FIFA Club World Championship, and you have to first win the UEFA European Club Championship in order to attend the FIFA tournament (which Real hasn't been able to Ronaldo or not) + in this season Barca has also won Copa del Rey (Spanish Cup) the UEFA Super Cup & Spanish Super Cup.

And is it only these things that determines it, Messi has no matter what (currently) still made the most goals, has a better efficiency and made the most assists including setting a new World Record for most goals in a season, beating Gerd Müllers incredibily goal scoring record.

So measured on titles this season + individual stats Messi v Ronaldo =
1)Messi = FIFA Club World Championship, Copa del Rey Winner (or runners up), Spanish championship runners up, UEFA Super Cup Winner & Spanish Super Cup Winner.
+ New world record for most goals in a season, and more assists and better effectivity in terms of goals in relation to trial (incl. topscorer in the UEFA European Club Championship & the Spanish championship).
2)Ronaldo = Spanish championship Winner.

= Messi is the best.

Mark Parent   May 28th, 2012 10:28 pm ET

Cristiano outplayed Messi in 1 key game in April against Barça, but Messi outplayed Cristiano in the other 5 match-ups of Barça vs. Real Madrid. Apart from being an incredible goal-scorer (he scored a record-setting 73 goals in all competitions), Messi is a much better team player. Remember also, Madrid bagged 1 trophy, La Liga, this year, Messi led Barça to bag 4 trophies!

Paul   May 29th, 2012 7:30 am ET

Messi broke some major records this year. Gerd's record has stood for four decades, until 2012. Messi also broke the Barcelona official all-time scroring record. Barcelona missed Villa, if he was in Barcelona would tip the scales and be UCL winners again.

Ibe   May 29th, 2012 8:40 am ET

MESSI is the best player to have ever kicked a ball, then there's zidane, Ronaldinho etc before C Ronaldo. As for this season the figures are there for everyone to see.

mike   May 29th, 2012 2:13 pm ET

Messi this, Messi that. He is great, but Ronaldo gets the nod because his team did win the championship this year. Guess all these Messi lovers didn't watch the Championship League finals where Messi was invisible, completely shut down. He choked, period.

Kiên   May 29th, 2012 2:26 pm ET

c.ronaldo is most striker in the world...

Michael   May 29th, 2012 10:35 pm ET

messi is good but Ronaldo is better this Season, and has shown more hunger for it. CR7 World Best No two ways about it because he has out shined Messi this season..

Michael   May 29th, 2012 10:46 pm ET

Why cant Messi apply the same playing force in his Country National Team? Argentina Hosted Copa America 2011 but were knocked out by Uruguay Luis Suarez won the best Player LG Copa America 2011 Ahead of Messi????. The reason why Messi is ex-ordinary is because he is playing in the best team in the world. If Messi is truly good, he should leave Barcelona FC and move elsewhere and let see if he can do such magic in another clubs like Manchester City, Arsenal Liverpool. Ronaldo has proved himself already in the English League now doing the same Magic in the Spanish La Liga Ronaldo all the way…..

Easy   May 29th, 2012 11:14 pm ET

I hate to admit, Messi is still the best although i would have prefered Ronaldo

Justin   May 30th, 2012 1:17 am ET

Ronaldo...

Because it`s true that Real Madrid can acheive the La Liga title owing to him...

Even though Karim Benzema and Gonzalo Iguain made over-40 goals for Real, that`s because many opponent DFs had focused on Ronaldo and both of Karim and Gonzalo relatively had a rather spacious space as attacking spearheads...That`s the effect of virtuous circle generated from Cristiano...

So I think in terms of the result of this season, Ronaldo has worth to be the World Player of the Year...

Mccolonel   May 30th, 2012 8:11 am ET

Ronaldo is the man.... love you

Ruknutts   May 31st, 2012 3:53 am ET

Ronaldo is a much better player, yes Messi is very good too, but he has a much better team to support him. If Messi had to work as hard as Ronaldo
he would be just an average player. You will see the real Messi when he is with his National side, not barcelona. A great player can play with any team and still perform, this is not the case with Messi.

Nsajigwa Mwasokwa SisiKwaSisi   May 31st, 2012 8:00 am ET

"Ronaldo is very good but is only unlucky to exist at the same time as MESSI. Messi is just too good. Even if Maradona was playing at this time , Messi would still have been better"...
someone has written this above, and is quite right. Louis Figo was good (indeed better than christiano)...so was tiery henry de lima and rivardo...but there was ZINEDINE ZIDANE the magic one, who outdistanced them all...christiano and all other good players of this generation faces the same dillema faced by figo and other before zidane.messi is that zidane of this age...just superhumanly good!!

Toyin   May 31st, 2012 11:20 am ET

Pedro pinto is spot on on this issue.messi,a fine player.CR7 a complete player.we know the number of sensless penalties awarded to barca which increased the goal tally of messi.CR7,a god.

Nduka N.   June 1st, 2012 1:29 pm ET

lets face this fact between CR7 and Messi once and for all....lets put sentiment apart, look at this way, Messi has been playing only with barca till now, he have not played in any other team or even in another country...CR-7 have actually proved why he can not be compared with messi in any aspect of football. messi is just a club material, went to world and failed, played...Ronaldo can do better than messi if he was in barca. Barca is equally the spanish team, what have messi done in the argentina national team.....lets try him in another league b4 comparing him with lord of football, CR7. Ronaldo proved himself with sporting Lisbon, manchester united and Real madrid....FIFA, shine ur eyes this time...u have favoured mess enough

Megster   June 2nd, 2012 7:32 am ET

Haters will hate but Messi WILL WIN his 4th Balon D'Or on January.

Chi   June 2nd, 2012 4:46 pm ET

Facts being presented shows that CR7 has scored against almost all the teams in La liga this season. Meaning that he was consistent in all the games he played this season for such to happen. His assist has also improved, coupled with the the fact that he was a better big game player than Messi this season. Messi was found wanting in many big/small games this season e.g. classicos,Chelsea Home and away etc... whilst CR7 held his own even in defeat.

Mateo07   June 3rd, 2012 3:50 pm ET

A portuguese choosing a portuguese is never credible! Messi is a better player in all parts of the game except shooting at distance. That's not really a question anymore. It doesn't matter who won the leauge or who scored most during the season, the way he play says it all. Messi is dominant as central midfielder, as winger and as a central forward. He works over the whole pitch, in defence, creating the attacks, he is scoring and he makes a lot of assists for his team mates. There is really no one like him!

Jose   June 3rd, 2012 5:28 pm ET

Easy to say that messi is the best when he's got andres iniesta and xavi pulling the strings. CR7 has already proven that he can be champion in both the premier league and la liga. I would like to see messi in the premier league or any other league without xavi and iniesta

vick   June 3rd, 2012 6:20 pm ET

ronnie is the best. he won the la liga and he was the heart beat of madrid. if messi is gud he shuld leave barca. mtcheeew

yosz   June 4th, 2012 9:13 pm ET

To be world player of the year Cristiano should be born again. It is not a question that Messi is the best ever.To the Cristiano here it is time to prove so many things, and a simple homework: the european championship ,
Let him show us actually who he is ,it is time hurry up

CJSpitz   June 6th, 2012 8:09 am ET

In my opinion, Messi was best out of those candidates from La Liga~ despite of losing the title, what he did was just indescribable and undisputed. Breaking so many records this season is one reason and he did it while so many key players in Barca were out because of injuries. Just think about it, it's the first ever to score 73 goals in the history of football~ world record!!! Football is keep on developing and he is going against the odds! 28 assists are another~! He isn't just goal scorer but, he also provides as well. He is first ever to win CL top scorer for 4 consecutive yrs! Scoring 5 goals in one match especially when it was in CL tournament phase. 10 hat-tricks this season which is also record-breaking(11 including one from Argentina)~! You can win the trophies at least once in your career if you are in a well-shaped team but, you can't guarantee of breaking a record.... but he broke so many in one season~! Living legend!

El Libero   June 7th, 2012 9:27 am ET

Pedro, Pedro, Pedro...!!...In your blog there about the top 3 in Spain, you mentioned Hulk.....Well done! He is as good as any striker out here in La Liga but the comparisons you made were with Zamarano(Chile) Sanchez( Mexico) and "Batigol" (Argentina).......why? Why did you do this mistake...are you biased towards other nationalities that are not Latin, Spanish or Ibaric.....For the record you failed to mention Raul in that list of com parables......and if you going to compare pure strikers than when you hear the name Sanchez, then Ian Rush is also mentioned in the same sentence....same era!
Anyways, this is just an observation to the man who has the best job in the world.....!!

Celestine   June 8th, 2012 3:58 am ET

Messi is ever d best (1) 11 hat-trick (2) 5 goals in a champions league macth (3) 50 goals in la liga (4) 73 goals in all competition (5) 4 trophies out of 6 (7) best in dribbling (8) best in incredible passes (9) very obedient & not rough (10) compared 2 maradona & pere C-ronaldo (1) 1 trophy out of 6 (2) scored every team, compare & no d best; MESSI is truly the best

Celestine   June 8th, 2012 4:04 am ET

People say messi should leave barca to another club but c-R left man-U for a greater club,,, Beware! So please choose a greater club for messi ok

Mike   June 14th, 2012 1:41 pm ET

Aside from the statistics, most valuabe player means the value that the player brings to his team and to football overall. In that respect there is no.one to match Messi. CR7 is a great player, but he is always thinking about himself. Just watch his reaction when he scores and when others on his team score, especially when he hasn't. It's all about me. He is a naturally gifted footballer but also he is naturally selfish. Messi is not selfish, he lives and breathes for Barcelona and Argentina, and it shows. He has more goals and assists than anyone. This is why he is more valuable. By far.

menace   June 20th, 2012 12:16 pm ET

ronaldo da better this year

Bernardo   June 20th, 2012 4:34 pm ET

If you take the front leg kik drible off of Ronaldop what alse he has to offer ?
Messi creates and master mind the plays and the whole team almost plays around Messi , I can not say that for Madrid.

CHARLES DENU   June 20th, 2012 6:12 pm ET

IS IT BASED ON INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE OR CLUB ACHIEVEMENT? I THINK RONALDO IS NO WHERE NEAR MESSI IN TERMS OF INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE AND ACHIEVEMENTS. HE HAS SET AND BROKEN A LOT OF RECORDS IN EUROPE AND SPAIN. CAN U PLEASE TELL ME WHAT RONALDO HAS DONE

emiola jide   June 20th, 2012 8:42 pm ET

Kilian   June 21st, 2012 1:17 am ET

73 goals and 28 assists in the 2011-2012 season and he's not MVP ? What? You give it to Ronaldo based on their team's results. Do you understand the 'P' in MVP ?

heru   June 26th, 2012 12:28 pm ET

messssssssssiiiii

charliepee   June 27th, 2012 4:22 pm ET

It surprises me when people do not understand a simple puzzle , all these players are good , you become the best among them when you help your team to win some trophies, so it's so simple Ronaldo is the main guy this time....

Bethel   July 4th, 2012 2:21 pm ET

i will give it to Ronado. Ronado can get a good result with a terrible midfield.

mohamed mhando   July 5th, 2012 8:11 am ET

messi is the best player,he plays beautiful football and since he is still young i expect much more from him in future.

jackie   July 5th, 2012 9:52 am ET

Iniesta

ibu   July 5th, 2012 10:09 am ET

To be honest with you guys..... MESSI IS THE God OF FOOTBALL..... No one else comes near him in ranking. FIFA or UEFA can give it to anybody, but the football (gospel) fact is that Messi is the best player ever to play the game of football after his country Maradona, but Pele is the greatest having won the World cup three times. Until Messi retires or another genius appears, he has no comperism. Thanks

Abu ayala   July 5th, 2012 6:43 pm ET

pls we should 4get about sentiment, lets face d truth Messi is d best.

Robin   July 6th, 2012 9:04 am ET

OK, so his logic is that R.M. won the second match agains Barca. So the lost on the first match doesn't count? What about the 2 matches for the Super cup? compare wins to losses between the 2 teams and you will see who comes ahead. And for all those who say that CR7 is the best becaue he won La Liga? How many trophies is that? How many did Messi win this Year? La Liga is a major championship, but winning the FIFA club championship is big too, isn't it? Congratulations to R.M. for winning La Liga, but that didn't prove they are better then Barca. Count the Trophies!!! MESSI is the GOAT!!!

wilson preston   July 6th, 2012 10:26 am ET

if rooney is not in the list leave andd start selecting cricket players

Francis   July 6th, 2012 5:33 pm ET

All round, CR7 is the complete footballer. He has proved it with Sporting Lisbon, Man U, Real Madrid and Portugal. Messi has captivated fans with Barca and still has to prove himself with Argentina. Both are great footballers, though Messi is mostly ably assisted by Iniesta and Xavi while CR7 can peform with minimum help.

Rais   July 7th, 2012 6:37 am ET

Messi is good. But he must go to another club like ronaldo to prove that he was very good without best player like xavi and iniesta.go to another league.prove it.I recommend portsmouth and bring that team to be champion league.

Beggi   July 8th, 2012 3:51 am ET

Rolanldo is the best

bryan   July 9th, 2012 2:04 am ET

messi in this moment is the best soccer player in the world but ronaldo is a good player and van persie in the future was a MVP.

Jide   July 10th, 2012 7:05 pm ET

It is out of envy and sometime hard-feelings for Ronaldo that always made some people pick Messi. Some great players do not score many goals. To equate the best to the number of goals is to reduce soccer to a game that lacks the artistry for which soccer is most admired. CR7 has the edge always.

khalifa Majid   July 12th, 2012 9:55 pm ET

Pinto again with portugese propaganda. If Messi is not injured he can best for another fiver seasons.
Messi messi messi
case closed.

Chinedu   July 13th, 2012 3:04 am ET

Messi has been beta than cr7 in the past 3yrs.but cr7 was beta last season.it is not the matter of scoring goals, the question is how important is the goal.messi can dribble 5 players and score.but cr7 can shoot from 40 yards and score.this year cr7 deserves best player award.his goals were more important

Bayo ironremi   July 13th, 2012 1:43 pm ET

To start with, CR7 is the best, this has been prove in 3 leagues, world cup, and euro nation cup, but messi, 1 league, no wrld cup, no nation cup.

CR7 score all la liga oposition, the same call not be said of messi. before the season begin CR7 promised to sacrifice goal for club honour and this he achivied.

who is messi when CR7 was injure in for more than 4 weeks in his first season in la liga and yet messi could only score 2 or 3 goal ahead of him, even pep Gardiola confess to respect the goal machine call CR7.

if CR7 was playing for self glory where will messi be with best and fastest moving midfeider/winger/striker on planet earth.

Am just short of words and adjective to qualify this gr8 player that has captivate million of people in the world.

CR7 is the only active or not that has the greatest number of followers.

CR7 is IT!

Jb Campbell   July 15th, 2012 9:12 am ET

Hmmmm..... the best player in the world is not listed here but I'll give you a clue. Won Euro 2008, World Cup in 2010 and Euro 2012. Players for Barcelona and has vision and awareness that messi can only dream of... Andres Inestia is surely the best player in the world. Messi is a fine striker of that there is no doubt....Ronaldo is worthy to grance any top 5 list but look how Barca play with out Inestia – they struggle... so c'mon lets not state the obvious but think with our heads... Inestia it is.

Thiago   July 19th, 2012 10:58 pm ET

It's not only that Madrid won against Barcelona. The difference of points was amazing, undertaking 100 points. The quality of the players of Barcelona is better, probably, the best team of all times. So if Cristiano managed to overide Barcelona, then this year, Cristiano deserves it. Even if Messi is better, this year, he wasn't.

walata   July 20th, 2012 3:19 pm ET

Dawa Adams Ibrahim   August 1st, 2012 6:59 am ET

Messi is all in the football world.Hé is incomparable to his contemporaries.Bravo Messi!

jack   August 1st, 2012 11:05 pm ET

Ronaldo won 1 title, messi won 4. messi scored more goals & made more assists. Ronaldo didn't take portugal to the euro final, so gets no bonus points there either. How is this even a discussion? Messi is head & shoulders better on all metrics & more importantly is actually liked by his teammates rather than ronaldo whose teammates even find him selfish!

michael halliday   August 2nd, 2012 9:16 am ET

i have read all the comment posted by people on this issue of MESSI & RONALDO. The truth is that Ronaldo is better this session then messi. more so,if u really want to known a good player let messi leave barca and play in other clubs around the world.
CR7 all the wayyyyyyyyyyyyy.

Ariel   August 2nd, 2012 9:49 pm ET

In football and as a human being, Messi by FAR...

Rick   August 2nd, 2012 11:15 pm ET

forget for a long, long time. That goes for players as well, the srseuptar names – Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney – and the rest who have travelled from all four corners of the globe to showcase

Karen   August 3rd, 2012 11:40 pm ET

The way I see it football is an Art not a Killer sport. So, looking at it from an artistic point of view I must admit I have never seen anyone playing quite like Ronaldo. Imitations, yes.One cannot even to start to compare Cristiano's artistry with that of Messi. OK, he is effective but all he has to show is his Road-Runner number (Beep!Beep!) and his "killer instinct". Well, Ronaldo can do that too and... much more. The other thing is Ronaldo is beautiful and sensitive. Messi a dwarf who looks rather messy. Sorry folks, I have to tell it as it is. One cannot even start to compare a Picasso piece with a Da Vinci masterpiece. Ladies prefer Da Vinci – obviously. One is a one trick pony, the other a multi-talented genius. The question who is better Ronaldo or messi? is for dummies – not for dames...

igledys Saranga   August 20th, 2012 1:45 pm ET

this site knows nothing about soccer...How can messi lose to ronaldo?????

Peleg   October 30th, 2012 10:08 am ET

Messi is better than Christiano by far.Forget about the fact Christiano won La Liga.Thats not all that counts to be the worlds best player.Messi was the highest goal scorer in all competitions in Europe last year.La Liga ,champions league inshort everything.second highest decisive passser in Europe as well.how can u compare him to Ronaldo.

tracylake2002   December 15th, 2012 2:33 pm ET

Messi is all of above them. In Spain he is the best.In England it is the flying Dutchman Robin van persie. In Italy no doubt it is Andre Pirlo, a great play maker. In Germany it is Reus, Upcoming superstar and winger.
Messi is the favorite all time.He is the most valuable to all leagues in Europe.
