Italy won the World Cup in 2006 but who will do it this time around?.
Italy won the World Cup in 2006 but who will do it this time around?.

Although many consider football to be a global sport, a look at the history of the World Cup shows only a handful of nations have mastered it. FIFA – the game's world governing body – recognizes 208 national associations but just seven have celebrated having the best team on the planet.

South Africa 2010 will be the 19th football World Cup. Of the previous 18 tournaments, five have been won by Brazil, four by Italy and three by Germany. Argentina and Uruguay have claimed two each and France and England one apiece. So, four European and three South American countries have triumphed but the world champions have never come from North America, Asia or Africa.

It is hard to see that record changing this time, although Africa's contenders will be bolstered by the first ever World Cup on their home continent. Ghana and Ivory Coast are arguably the strongest of those countries.

Chelsea striker Didier Drogba will lead the Elephants' campaign. He hit 37 goals for his club this season and was the English Premier League’s leading scorer. His teammate Salomon Kalou has been in good form too. However, another Chelsea player, Michael Essien, could miss out through injury – a setback for the hope of the Black Stars.

We’re expecting a warm welcome from South Africa’s fans but only the most blinkered of them will consider the hosts to have any chance of lifting the trophy. Even 'dark horse' status is optimistic for Bafana Bafana, unlike France, Portugal, the United States, Australia and North Korea who each have credibility.

France and Portugal had poor qualifying campaigns – one of the reasons why they aren’t the top seeds in their respective groups. But both countries have talented squads and if they find form at the right time will be a match for anyone. Portugal, in particular, will hope their Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo gets inspired on the biggest stage of all.

Like Greece at the 2004 European Championship, the United States will feel they are more than the sum of their parts – and players like Landon Donovan, Clint Dempsey and Tim Howard show star qualities at times.

Australia’s teamwork and battling spirit will be their biggest weapons. Many felt they were unlucky to lose to eventual champions Italy four years ago – and the Aussies can never be ruled out at any sport.

North Korea will be the lowest ranked team at this World Cup but mainly because they play so little international football. No-one knows very much about them and, as they did back in 1966, the country could spring a few surprises.

Of the highest-ranked nations, I would discount Argentina, England and Germany. Maradona may have been a genius as an Argentine player but he’s some way short of that as a coach. He isn’t getting the best out of world player of the year Lionel Messi and his omission of Esteban Cambiasso and Javier Zanetti from his World Cup squad is puzzling.

England’s first team is good but they lack strength in depth and don’t have enough goalscorers while Germany have been dealt a huge blow with the injury to their captain Michael Ballack. Not only vastly experienced, Ballack has scored an astonishing 42 goals in his 98 international appearances.

Brazil, Spain, Italy and Netherlands are the outstanding favorites. However, neither Spain nor Netherlands have won the World Cup before, while a European team has never triumped away from European soil.

Some may have more chance than others on paper – but what will happen in reality is anyone's guess; so who do you think will be crowned world champions?

spain and netherlands have the best teams and probably do well most likey to win it.

argentina have the best strikers messi, melito, arguro, tevez and higauin but the coach is the main problem. the good thing is argentina have a some what easy group and will only face stiff competion if they reach they semi finals.

germany will suprise every one but without michael ballack it will be hard for them to cope without him. england has great coach under don fabio cappello and will go far if they keep their heads on the pitch.

italy ,france and portugal i doubt if they will go past quarter finals since they dont have many good players esp france.leaving nasri and benzeema was the wrosed mistake they made, ribbery is injury prone and has a bad temper, henry sad to say is finished. anleka is ok so i doubt they will do well after all they need 2cheat 2 even qualify. lol

brazil wont win this cup because they only have one quality player kaka who had mixed season with real madird. they have great defenders but offensively they will depend on kaka which will lead to thier demise. dunga has made the worsed mistake leaving ronaldinho, pato and maybe diego out and bringing in man city rejects robinho and elano. brazil will now be one of the easy teams to beat, i doubt they will go past they semis with this team regardless of theier defence. one team countries dont win world cups and kaka is the only player brazil will be depening on.

wediharambe eritrea   May 19th, 2010 2:23 pm ET

i think brazil will win the world cup. They are very good in technic and they can play well together on the field .But i dont think it will be an african country to won this tornament

Rodrigo Vieira Godinho   May 19th, 2010 3:53 pm ET

Hi! I think Brazil will be crowned world champion again because brazilians know how to play a good soccer.

pabitra koirala   May 19th, 2010 4:00 pm ET

Argentina .... as the world greatest player Diego Maradona is the team coach and his skills and techinques will be the best inspiration for the squad in this big event at South Africa..

Ademar Barbosa   May 19th, 2010 4:44 pm ET

Brasil will lift the trophy!!! believe me!!

GIRIDHAR.R   May 19th, 2010 4:58 pm ET

TO CNN.COM SPORTS. i think this time 2010 FIFA world cup goes to GERMANY.

david martin   May 19th, 2010 5:01 pm ET

hopefully argentina preferable anyone but england its alreay gone stupid with little england flags on every car

stephen   May 19th, 2010 5:04 pm ET

hmm,
I think that Argentina have a great chance if the Manager stays in control, other contenders must be Spain but only if get injuries sorted, Brazil wont win and England will take beating. So to call it, hmm spain...

BRAZIL – BRAZIL- BRAZIL .........................

Osvaldo   May 19th, 2010 5:05 pm ET

As an Italian, I must confess that unfortunately the Italy squad will be going as tourists to South Africa. The players lack the hunger and spirit to win. Amazing that Diego Milito and Cambiasso were not included for Argentina...

Charles Ouko   May 19th, 2010 5:18 pm ET

Hi Ale

I write from Nairobi, Kenya and many thanks for your brilliant piece. However I beg to differ, on one or two things that you state.

One, your implying that both Ghana and Cote D'Ivoire will go further than say The Indomitable Lions of Cameroun.

Two, that England are rank outsiders.

The Indomitable Lions SHALL be the last of the African Nations to leave SA 2010.

Principally because the draw was very favorable to them and they should have no problem advancing out of their group alongside Holland.

Should they be tops, they will most likely face Paraguay, while if they are second to the Dutch, they would certainly face Italy.
be to fazed about taking on the Azurri again.

Having been African Nations Cup runners up in February, while fielding a team devoid of their five big name players (Essien,Muntari,Agogo,Pantsil and Mensah),on their day Ghana should be able to make round two alongside Germany;but again they may not as neither Serbia nor Australia will be push overs.

Cote D'Ivoire though having top quality players of the likes of Kolo and Yaya Toure,Dindane,Kalou and the irrepressible Drogba will still have to be at their best of bests to advance ahead of Portugal, but again its not impossible.

As for England, four years of Capello coupled with a squad thats also been unchanged over the same period, mark my following words, it will take a lot to deny England a place at soccer city on July 11.

Thank and kind regards.

Charles Ouko

mike   May 19th, 2010 5:19 pm ET

when we know the final 23 of all the teams we will guess more accurately,at the moment, the final four looks like ,England,Brazil,Chile,Spain or Holland.

john deen   May 19th, 2010 5:28 pm ET

I think a South American team will win it !

Luis   May 19th, 2010 5:38 pm ET

I think the fittest teams for this world cup are Spain and Brazil, but I guess Brazil is slightly better and they also have their history of success playing for them...I would definitely bet for Brazil this time. Anyways...I hope Spain wins!!!!! Vamos roja!!!!!!!!!

Tom   May 19th, 2010 5:41 pm ET

Italy will be crowned Champs once more

krishna   May 19th, 2010 5:42 pm ET

its gonna be SPAIN this time.. what a team they have.. !!

Ricardo LEITE   May 19th, 2010 5:44 pm ET

Brazil will win the world cup in Africa, you can see that Brazil has won all the competions that he faced with Dunga as a coach! Chek it out the statistics!!!

Jaime Rojas   May 19th, 2010 5:45 pm ET

If Spain manages to recover from injuries on time they will take the world cup home. They have the top players in every position at keeper, defense, midfield and forward. True, the US shocked them at the confederations cup but upsets happen. Hopefully they can keep strong mentally because the talent and team is there! VIVA ESPANA!!!!

Mani   May 19th, 2010 5:45 pm ET

Spain;)

Jack Wynt   May 19th, 2010 5:47 pm ET

Brazil will win the cup.

Dieter   May 19th, 2010 5:49 pm ET

With or without Ballack, Deutschland!!!!!!

Heath   May 19th, 2010 5:50 pm ET

I'm going with Denmark

sal   May 19th, 2010 5:51 pm ET

Argentina will win, they are playing bad now, just to trick the world. Make my words.

João Victor   May 19th, 2010 5:51 pm ET

Brazil of course, the country that have the bests players.

Frank   May 19th, 2010 5:55 pm ET

The Woza 2010 will be full of surprises, as we hall witnessed during qualifications, some strong teams had to rely on literally a helping "hand" to get there!
My team will be Cameroon, if only they could find that perfect blend i think they are the dark knights for me. Strong squad and whats more interesting is that they are considered underdogs even for more depressing teams like ivory cost which don't show up when every body expects them to...
This world cup for the first in its history will remain in Africa.

Oscar Valiente   May 19th, 2010 5:58 pm ET

Spain, England or Argentina will win it!!!

Katie Roth   May 19th, 2010 5:58 pm ET

Hey, what a question. Switzerland is gonna win!

Ademola Adebowale   May 19th, 2010 6:01 pm ET

Brazil'll win the 2010 World Cup.

Justin Hevey   May 19th, 2010 6:02 pm ET

Umm. However wrote this article did a horrible job because all he or her talks about is the usuall Brazil, Argentina, Italy and germany well what about Spain? The worlds #1. They are going to be the words most watched team and the most probabale team to win.

Mike   May 19th, 2010 6:03 pm ET

Lets see...in South Africa in the wintertime...who plays well in the winter??? Germany? No Ballack, No dice!. France? Hand ball got you there, I think you have used all of your luck! Denmark? Not strong enough!
Holland? Possibly!!! If you are going to Vegas, I think it is finally Englands time. They will deal with adverse conditions the best and is about time that their luck changes...so England in a close match with Spain!!!

Enrico   May 19th, 2010 6:03 pm ET

Hope it will be Italy, but I see the Brazilians coming out as probable winners.

anyonesguess   May 19th, 2010 6:21 pm ET

Whoever wins the FIFA confederations Cup does NOT win the World Cup. Brazil won the last one. It is England, just because of Capello.

Cugeno   May 19th, 2010 6:31 pm ET

Well, I'd like for the USA to win... but that won't happen. I fear that the loss of Balalck is too much for a young German side to overcome. Since both Italy and Brazil make me mildly ill, and I'm not a huge fan of Spain, I'm pulling for the Dutch to win it all. Oh, and it would be nice to see the Aussies make a fine showing, as well.

Bruce   May 19th, 2010 6:34 pm ET

I think either Spain or Holland wins this world cup, but i'll give the dutch squad the best chance

900rr   May 19th, 2010 6:40 pm ET

SERBIA!!!!
We will make miracle happen!

Alalas   May 19th, 2010 6:43 pm ET

I see many forces in this World Cup such as Brazil (of course), Holland, Spain, Portugal and Argentina (unfortunately).
Although Dunga has left behind the best players nowadays such as Paulo Henrique Ganso and Neymar, I believe he's doing a good job, just see at the last tournements, he won them all.
I do believe the Brazilian skretch still need a leadership in the field while palying, and hopefully Lucio (Inter Milan) will take it over!
Go Brazil!

Alfonso Hermann   May 19th, 2010 6:46 pm ET

Doesnt matter who wins, what matters is that FIFA cleans up itself undertaking a cristal clear tournment. Unfortunately, once again the groups were manipulated favoring the most economically viable teams....not a good start.

Alex   May 19th, 2010 6:50 pm ET

I agree with Katie Roth, definitely Switzerland!

Asad   May 19th, 2010 6:51 pm ET

Brazil is more likely to win the world cup.Though we can not anticipate anything for sure, in the view of statistics and statues of teams at the moment brazil is the winner of 2010 world cup.

Tobal   May 19th, 2010 6:52 pm ET

In my dreams I wish a miracle with Mexico, but I know it'll be between Spain and Argentina

Toby in Cancun   May 19th, 2010 7:01 pm ET

Spain and England have prepared very well for this cup.

However, Brazilians have figured out the winning formula and they can use it any time, anywhere.

Ajay Thakur   May 19th, 2010 7:03 pm ET

My Heart Beats for Brazil.....

Cecilia   May 19th, 2010 7:13 pm ET

SPAIN will win! Xavi, Iniesta, Villa , Torres, Casillas, Pujol, the best team !

dan   May 19th, 2010 7:16 pm ET

FRANCE,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,WHO ELSE?

Steve   May 19th, 2010 7:19 pm ET

I would put my money on Brazil! In any case, I hope France doesn't make it past the first round – Ireland should be in their place after Henri's double handball in the penalty area! Disgraceful! And hey, no more pausing/stopping before penalties now...

christof   May 19th, 2010 7:27 pm ET

Brazil of course against Spain. It will be the best. And Greece in small' final !!!!!!

jabunk21   May 19th, 2010 7:41 pm ET

i wish the brazil wins, but i'm not sure who will win, Dunga didn't convene 'em i won't say the names naah.

John-Ryan   May 19th, 2010 7:46 pm ET

I guess I'll be the one to say it, The USA will win! Lets be honest, It's really only a matter of time before the Usa is a Football powerhouse on the global scale. Here in America, the number of children under 18 who play Football, Or soccer, is larger then those who play american football, baseball, basketball, and every other sport Combined. So, its only a matter of time before we spit out a LeBron James who decided to grace the Football field.

robert   May 19th, 2010 7:47 pm ET

According to a famous clairvoyant in Brazil called Jucelino da Luz, Germany is going to win the Cup against Brazil.

bob   May 19th, 2010 7:51 pm ET

ITALIA

vizokholie   May 19th, 2010 8:04 pm ET

Argentina because the have the best strikers or Spain because of the best team.

Saaliha_TT   May 19th, 2010 8:07 pm ET

Brazil will probably win even though i don't want them to win. The runners-up I'd like to win are either Argentina or Italy!! Too bad Ballack is out, Germany is a top team as well.

USA - MN   May 19th, 2010 8:07 pm ET

Well since I'm from the USA....... I couldn't care less! Nothing against Soccer and nothing against those that love the sport,,,,, we just really don't care! Don't take it personal!

SUSHILL   May 19th, 2010 8:14 pm ET

argentina will become for the 3th time champions , never underestimated the heart of a champion and that is maradona

mesfin   May 19th, 2010 8:15 pm ET

in paper Spain and England are favorites but deep down i think this is the time for Argentina..,

Saul Yudelowitz   May 19th, 2010 8:19 pm ET

Having worked on rehabilitating most European footballers from injury and for injury prevention I put my money on England.

Lata   May 19th, 2010 8:28 pm ET

Everybody tries to put logic behind their opinion. Last time around, how many of you thought that Italy would win? How many of you thought Italy would be World Champions when they were losing 1-0 to Australia with 10 minutes to go at the 1/4 final stage?
If you want to use logic, here it is:
A) Climate. There is a reason why a European team never won outside Europe. This puts Brazil and Argentina as favourites and puts Spain, Portugal and France as European favourites.
B) Organization/concentration. this always puts Germany at the top but Dunga's Brazil is also very "European" in style.
C) Passion/ Belief/ Courage: 3 teams: Diego's Argentina, Ronaldo's Portugal and Puyol's Spain. They will die on the pitch for their team.

Yumil   May 19th, 2010 8:33 pm ET

In a delusional hopeful way , I'll have to say, Mexico!

hidde   May 19th, 2010 8:37 pm ET

Netherlands are gonna do it, they are good not AMAZing but all the other are in terrible shape and holland is still solid untouched and all the players are on the same level giving holland the best chance :) iam gonna be there to watch them win!

Fabio   May 19th, 2010 8:37 pm ET

OF COURSE...BRAZIL WILL BE THE WINNER OF WORLD CUP..FOR A SIMPLE REASON...OUR TEAM ´´C´´ IS BEST THAN ANYONE...ALTHOUGH OUR COACH DUNGA HAVE MADE MISTAKES WHEN ASKED FOR THE PLAYERS, I BELIEVE OUR ´´TROLLS SOCCER TEAM´´ IS BETTER THAN HALF OF ANOTHER TEAM...THE MORE SOCCER ´´EXPERTS´´ BLOW UP OUR TEAM MORE THEY WILL BE CONVINCED AT FINALS ABOUT OUR TALENT..IT´S LIKE BASKETBALL FOR AMERICANS, OR BASEBALL FOR CUBANS...THE OTHER TEAMS JUST WAITING FOR THE EXPECTED AND HONORED ´´DEFEAT´´.

gkedpage   May 19th, 2010 8:39 pm ET

BRAZIL!!! Always Brazil!!

paul landelle   May 19th, 2010 8:41 pm ET

FRANCE will make it no problem.
I mean back to France the first week

jzellah   May 19th, 2010 8:42 pm ET

Spain, they are the best this time.

Ryan   May 19th, 2010 9:01 pm ET

Hollland DUDE We have the best midfield :D

Tee   May 19th, 2010 9:01 pm ET

I believe that this world cup will go to NIGERIA!!!

It is about time that the cup goes to an African country- this is the year for the Super Eagles!!!!!!!

Gregg   May 19th, 2010 9:02 pm ET

In the semi-finals I see:

England
Brazil
Spain
Netherlands

Argentina is good, but Maradona is like cancer to them with his big ego from a player long washed up. All the talent in the world is nothing without proper management.

Jack   May 19th, 2010 9:07 pm ET

The team that will win it will WANT to win it more than the others; will have at least as much skill and teamwork as the best of the teams; and, they will be the luckiest as you can't win without a bit of luck (unless you are the Germans). So, which team meets all criteria? Strange though it sounds, I say England.

MARCOS SEISDEDOS FILHO   May 19th, 2010 9:11 pm ET

THE USA SHOULD TAKE IT ALL THIS YEAR IF THEY KEEP THEIR COMPOSURE. THEY HANDELED SPAIN QUITE EASILY AND DID SO TO BRAZIL FOR THE FIRST HALF IN THE GOLD CUP FINALS. PARAGUAY LOOKS GOOD AS WELL. BRAZIL IS LACKING IN THE MIDFIELD SO I DO NOT EXPECT MUCH FROM THEM.

Yemi   May 19th, 2010 9:29 pm ET

This time around an African Nation will win the cup. I am counting on Nigeria to win.

Piscean   May 19th, 2010 9:39 pm ET

No one will win the world cup.

Chris   May 19th, 2010 9:43 pm ET

It is intrigueing that we have both a world cup year and winter olympic together on the same world stage. Back to the pitch, I would rank Brazil in the top four, never underestimate Portugal, a young side with plenty of vigour and remember Italy,s fans can be the extra player that can generate momentum for their lads. austaluego.....

Fred from France   May 19th, 2010 10:05 pm ET

France of course !
Why ?
We're not favorit ... and we play better when we're not favorit in the final tournament (French paradox)

ben   May 19th, 2010 10:24 pm ET

NEW ZEALAND!!

eh?   May 19th, 2010 10:37 pm ET

"Brazil, Spain, Italy and Netherlands are the outstanding favorites"

Eh, there isn't a bookies in the world who thinks this. How can you spurt this stuff out?! You're throwing facts around that seem to have come out of nowhere?!

Pretty much every betting shop, sports pundit or man in the street has the top four as Brazil, Spain, England and Argentina.

To claim Italy and Netherlands are 'outstanding favourites' is a ridiculous piece of ill informed journalism.

Dora   May 19th, 2010 10:40 pm ET

I think Brazil will win the Cup. They play by heart.

Frankie   May 19th, 2010 10:52 pm ET

U.S.A. all the way!

Thanasis   May 19th, 2010 10:53 pm ET

GREECE will make the surprise this time around like with the EuroCup in 2004!!

the dragon   May 19th, 2010 11:01 pm ET

guys i think its pretty obvious New Zealand has the competition sown up. I mean come on we have two players that dont even clubs. Half our players are unpaid. watch out brazil, NZ is gonna destroy u

Ingrid Carvalho   May 19th, 2010 11:02 pm ET

I know little about soccer, but, lately, whenever Brazil forgot about big star players (Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Romario,...), the team got GREAT results.
Earlier, Pelé was able to win the World Cup, but other big star players like Zico don't.
It's a team work!!!! Not only one man play. And this time, Brazil seams to have a team again...Even the Emperor was left out...
My advice to opponent teams: Soccer is a little surprise box!

tom   May 19th, 2010 11:08 pm ET

Probably italy. Not because they are better but because they make the difference where it matters wen it comes to cheating eg. diving and play acting. I would like to see Germany win it though.

Carlos Santos   May 19th, 2010 11:14 pm ET

Despite the mistaken call of Dunga, in some locations, Kaka has no reserve height and Goose out there, I'm sure Brazil will once again CHAMPION OF THE WORLD

Tresguerras   May 19th, 2010 11:35 pm ET

The world will win. Whoever takes the trophy,
A joyus moment to forget all the world troubles, discriminations, finance snafu´s, wars, and we will enjoy a party of the finest futbol.
WE ALL ARE GOING TO WIN. And our country will be the best.

MEXICO

Aman Sherchan   May 19th, 2010 11:45 pm ET

I am fully sure Argentina will lift the world cup 2010 Trophy in South Africa.

SirMark   May 19th, 2010 11:49 pm ET

NORTH Korea has credibility? REaaaaaallY? I'd say South Korea has credibility with a 4th place in 2006.. and winning their SA WC qualifying group.. but I'd chalk that up to a typo... get it together!

Robert Oliver   May 20th, 2010 12:31 am ET

Brazil! The coach has picked great athletes but most important, he picked players that have some maturity and are passionate about the game. Brazil does have a lot of "stars" but the coach looked for, and choose, a group that have one goal in mind... Winning the World Cup for their country. "novel" idea isn't it? So often players are worried about their TV time, contract, movies, endorsements, that they forget about the team. I mean, remember Brazil in the last W.C.?
Great players, good experience and an incredible thirsty to win... I pity the team that goes against such force!!
Go BRAZIL!!!

Paul Henderson   May 20th, 2010 12:33 am ET

MEXICO will be the big surprise in SA 2010. MARK MY WORDS... they have a secret weapon this year. I became close to one of their triners and it is amazing what is cooking in their kitchen. I would put all my life savings on their emerging victorious from this world cup.

fernando mendez   May 20th, 2010 12:34 am ET

Spain or Brazil (hopefully Brazil) I do not see any one else

Stef   May 20th, 2010 12:38 am ET

Germany will deliver. These guys are young and hungry even w/o (or despite) Ballack missing it....

marcos   May 20th, 2010 1:20 am ET

Seriously... Who do u guys think that will win this world cp? Just have a loook back and check the most consistent team and the answer is easy... Brazil of course! They won all the competitions they took part and its a fact... Mark my words Brazil will win this world cup.

Steven   May 20th, 2010 1:53 am ET

I hope it's ganna be Italy. But to be honest,Brazil english and Argentina are all potential.

G.Royal Richard   May 20th, 2010 7:05 am ET

ITS ARGENTINA BY COACH MARADONA WHATEVER YOU SAY OR THINK. THEY HAVE VERY EXPERIENCED AND HIGH TACTICAL PLAYERS IN THE WORLD THEY CAN CHANGE THE LOSING GAME TO VICTORY.

FEW EG. MESSI, MARTIN PALERMO, HINGUAIN FORWARD GOOD FORWARD, & MIDFIELDERS THEY HAVE NEW FACES IN THE HOME TOWN, DIDI MARIA & OTHERS THEY ALL PLAY WELL AND ALSO FOR REPUTED CLUBS.

I WISH ARGENTINA ALL THE BEST AND I HOPE THEY WILL WIN THE WORLD CUP-2010 AT SOUTH AFRICA.

patty   May 20th, 2010 8:28 am ET

Italy or Germany

HWB   May 20th, 2010 12:24 pm ET

The Dutch team has a very good combination of experienced and young players with a lot of creativity, skills and technique (Sneijder, Van der Vaart, Robben, Van Persie just to mention a few), but also the aggression to give some extra power (Kuyt, De Jong, Van Bommel). In the past, the team would fall apart because of big egos, but it appears that the players are all working for the team instead of their own commercial interests.

If I look at other favourites, I think that they rely to much on individual skills instead of the team effort (Kaka, Messi, Ronaldo).

Unfortunately, the African teams in the past always lost the team organization when the pressure was on. It would positively surprise me if this edition (on of) these teams would manage to keep the organization in tact and reach the semis. We will see!

josh   May 20th, 2010 12:39 pm ET

SPAIN, the betting houses in the World point to that. plus Spain has the best keeper in the world, a solid defense, the best midfield in the world and the best attack in the world. and Euro2008 champs. only a miracle or a referee like in 2002 could stop Spain. GO USA!!!!

Kyle   May 20th, 2010 1:06 pm ET

in my opinion, spain has the highest chance of winning it (not saying that they definitely will). They have the most solid lineup out of all the other teams, offensively and defensively. The only thing holding them back is a history of not being able to capitalize and actually win it.

Komla Alade   May 20th, 2010 2:26 pm ET

Ghana will win the world cup. Ghana all the way. Ghana for life

Thomas   May 20th, 2010 5:07 pm ET

It will be Germany! They will beat Brazil 1:0 in the final. Take a look in the past. Germany reached the quarters in 62, the final in 66, took third place in 70, and won the world cup in 1974. the same string of results began in 1998, when they were eliminated in the quartes, second place in 2002, therd palce in 2006. so, the next time, they will be champions again. Also Germany and Brazil never played against each other on the european or american continent. The meet only on neutral ground, asia or africa. This time, they will meet again, and the winners will be germany. The loss of Ballack is also a great chance. Germany has a whole range of young players, who flourished in one of the strongest leagues, the bundesliga. They have a great goalkeper in Manuel Neuer. Excellent defenders with jerome Boateng, Lahm, Jansen, a terriffic midfield with Özil, Kroos, Schweinsteiger, Khedira, Marin, Thomas Müller etc, and a competitive striking force. They are young and hungry, and they will perform as a team. They will be seen as relative outsiders, but they will grow in confidense, and they will win the cup!

The last time I checked my crystal ball, I saw a flag with colors green, blue and yellow on it. This can be South Africa or Brazil. Can't wait to see if my crystal ball is right.

They wil win.

Danny   May 21st, 2010 5:51 am ET

You guys are talking about Brazili leaving, Pato, Ronaldinho and Diego out from the Brazilian aquad. I say that Brazil has a big chance, but you guys have no idea that Brazil is leaving the two wonderkids that plays with Robinho, called Paulo Henrique Ganso and Neymar.. Ronaldinho is the only one from the list named by you guys that I regret not going, but Ganso and Neymar are missed very much too. Not to mention Adriano that didnt take it serious.. Dont forget Brazil has a factory of good players and Ganso and Neymar are to be the next best players in the world.. Ganso is like Kaka!! Neymar is better than Robinho, plus he is 17 years old.. Brazil will win.. former confederation cup winner, americas cup winner..

Yoothana Mumme   May 21st, 2010 11:51 am ET

Don't be surprised to see Germany against Brazil (again)...because both of these teams have done very well on foreign continents. On paper, Spain, The Netherlands, maybe England and Portugal look very strong. But it's always the Germanys, Brazils, Italys that do well. Don't be surprised w/ Argentina and/or France either. Of the African teams...Cameroon may be the best bet, as Ivory Coast has the hardest group with Ghana the second hardest group.

:) CHILE will !! CHILE will show how much passion and love we have for our country and soccer. :)

Dr. Cajetan Coelho   May 22nd, 2010 8:41 am ET

Brazil looks formidable and compact. Dunga and his think tank have taken some bold decisions in the run up to the mega event. For the preparatory stage they are in a tough pool. They will be thoroughly tested by Ronaldo's Portugal, Didier Drogba's Elephants and the North Koreans who experts say are capable of imparting shock treatment to any famed rivals on their day. Brazil has a safe goal keeper, solid defence, versatile midfield and a reasonably good set of strikers.

Krittiya Balankura   May 22nd, 2010 8:51 am ET

I think Brazil and Germany in the final, I wish Brazil win the cup.

Farook M   May 22nd, 2010 9:02 am ET

Spain is going to win this World Cup. The final will be Spain Vs England.

Krittiya Balankura   May 22nd, 2010 9:19 am ET

I think my comment is excellent , may be is true .
In the world cup 2010, I think Brazil and Germany in the final, Brazil win the cup.

allwhite   May 22nd, 2010 10:35 am ET

I think New Zealand will surprise everyone and win the world cup. I predict the final will be between New Zealand and Brazil. Preiction for final:

NEW ZEALAND 2

BRAZIL 1

Good luck to all the teams, hope you all enjoy yourselves and have a great game.

lawrence   May 22nd, 2010 2:59 pm ET

Everybody loves a winner and that's why it's only the big ones that have been mentioned over and over again-Brazil,Germany, Italy, Argentina, England, France(thanks to that hand)-. How I wish it will be an African team, but may be a long shot still. Have to settle for Brazil or Germany, because these are the ones that can withstand any pressure now. Cheers.

Portugal will win.

Manuela   May 22nd, 2010 5:20 pm ET

The Azzurri of course!

Oooooo yes! Charles Ouko,

The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon SHALL be the last of the African Nations to leave SA 2010.

Mr Alex Thomas, you have to pull out your note pad and create a seperate and outstanding page on which you can write in bold marks
"""Watchout for Cameroon!!!!!!!!"""
Star the page and update daily so that you will remember all that happened when you will have to write the brilliant article for the Indomitable Lions of Africa

robbie   May 24th, 2010 11:07 am ET

The author makes a very very grave and blatant mistake when he says you can discount Germany!

It doesnt matter whos injured, how they're playing b4 the competition, or anything else. Germany are pretty much the greatest tournament footballing country ever, including Brazil. And I say that as an Englishman. Germany should never be written off because they always grind out results.

Kal-el   May 24th, 2010 11:15 am ET

World cup is an unforgetable show for those, like me, love soccer, I´m Brazilian, obviously my heart will be strongly beating for my team, but I believe things won´t be easy for anyone, I think Brazil, Argentina and Spain will be fighting for the champions title, and I wouldn´t risk a final comment, during world cup, you forget anything that happened before, it seem reborn in a different spirit, I´ve seen it in the brazilian internal tournament, where great opponents come stronger for final unless they´ve made badly before. Let´s wait and see ! great show´s coming up !!!

kevin mickus   May 24th, 2010 12:12 pm ET

Jorge Frasero   May 24th, 2010 12:22 pm ET

Brazil, Spain, England and Netherlands. With Brazil and Spain playing in the World Cup Final. I will be cheering for Mexico until they meet the big guys but they don't enough to finish with the likes of the top four IMO.

Every time I watch this tournament huge mistakes were always made with the referee always making a decision that decides the game. Until Fifa changes than I will find out who has the best team in the world for now.......

But my favorite team is Portugal.

Jalmir Sousa   May 24th, 2010 2:40 pm ET

But inexperienced coach, the first Cup for Dunga!!!!

Therefore the preliminar convocation, have a good team, then Brazil is great favorite followed Argentina, Spain and Italy.

Go Brazil!!!!

ok whoever keeps mentioning that mexico has a shot at lifiting the world cup in south africa because they have some kind of trick theyll be pulling out their sleeve must be pretty gullible or not have very good vision. the only miracle for mexico would be for them to make it out of the first round only to be sent home promptly in the elimination stages. concacaf teams cannot arent going to be giving any european or comebol teams serious competition in the world cup anytime soon and thats a fact so stop kidding yoursef

Oswaldo L Bracco   May 24th, 2010 3:10 pm ET

Neorg trab snarf   May 24th, 2010 5:16 pm ET

I guess Germany will surprise everyone, but as many times the title will go to a country who's highest goal is defending. Netherlands, Spain and Brazil probably will show the best football but will not reach the final. And the winner is.....Portugal.....

joop   May 24th, 2010 7:20 pm ET

My heart is with Mexico, there is a small chance they will reach the Final four, hope is there, ja !!! The final four I go with are: Brasil, Argentina, England and Spain. Good luck to all the teams !!!

bingo   May 24th, 2010 10:41 pm ET

Brazil, Germany, Argentina & Italy will be as competitve as usual. France, Netherlands, England & Portugal will be falling off as the competition progresses. USA is progressing very well internationally but they're still one step below. Africa can turn up a surprise team as usual, which will be great for the compettion. But undoubtedly the team of the moment is Spain – It's a magnificent group with a solid winning attitude and hungry to be part of the 'big boys' club once & for all. My bet is 100% Spain.

Aleksandar   May 24th, 2010 11:20 pm ET

World cup 2010 is going to be remembered as the championship won by a team that wasn't in the top five favourites-SERBIA!

Symon   May 25th, 2010 5:30 am ET

I think this time it is hard to predict the winner but don't be surprised to see a teams like Argentina, England, Ghana and Brazil fighting out in semis. If its not England, so let be what no one expects an African team.

Walid   May 25th, 2010 5:31 am ET

"Brazil, Spain, Italy and Netherlands are the outstanding favorites"..
With all due respect, let CNN bring more qualified experts to predict the favourites.

Italy's youngest player is 30 years old (he's considered the teenager of the squad) and their results in last year's Confederation Cup is the biggest proof that the team is too weak to compete in 2010. The squad needs a holistic change of skin.

Brazil's force lies in their outstanding goalkeeper as well as their solid defense (Maicon, Lucio and Dani Alves) but not in their midfield and attacking side, which are not impressive and convincing. Last year's results also in South Africa showed that, with the exception of their match against Italy (which is a weak team anyway), Brazil was always suffering to clinch a win against their opponents. Even Egypt was almost capable of stealing a draw from them.
Therefore, Brazil is not a favourite this time and will leave probably the competition in the quaterfinals.

Netherlands and Spain are indeed very strong teams and can therefore win the title provided they break the ongoing curse that has haunted them over the years.

Argentina has tons of excellent players that can change the course of a game anytime. Their weakness lies in their coach, otherwise, they could have been considered as strong as the Spanish team if not more and hence ranked as top favourites to win the title.

By the way, I'm a die-hard German fan, and I hope they can win the title. But we need luck because our team is not the strongest in the competition, although we have a lot of very young talented and promising players, especially in the midfield. I hope Tony Kroos will emerge as a superstar in the competition.

Karl   May 25th, 2010 5:48 am ET

Italy will beat France in South Africa for the World Championship

HANYUHAN   May 25th, 2010 7:02 am ET

After watching the England V Mexico and Argentina V Canada games overnight my thoughs remain much the same: Its likely that either Spain or Italy will win. I cant see anyone else with the depth-quality except maybe Argentina but their defence, without Zanetti and Cambiasso is dubious. As an Australian, well it'd be nice if Australia got through to the round of 16 but I dont think there's been the quality-investment there this time around. I'm still amazed that New Zealand is in the World Cup. I can't really understand how that happened. As if someone wasn't monitoring the gate and they just wandered in, sheepishly.

Yvonne   May 25th, 2010 8:22 am ET

Brazil will win it!

Francy   May 25th, 2010 9:09 am ET

It would be Germany / Argentina or Brazil.

Gigi   May 25th, 2010 9:15 am ET

I do not know who will win, but I am certain it will not be Italy

Rajesh Kohli   May 25th, 2010 10:30 am ET

SPAIN has the highest possiblity of winning this world cup with players like Xavi, Iniesta, Villa , Torres, Casillas, Pujol,.., but Germans can not be ruledout. They can be the black horse.

Penta   May 25th, 2010 10:52 am ET

"brazil will now be one of the easy teams to beat" HAHAHA thats why they´ve won everything in the last couple of years...same players, same coach...

panos   May 25th, 2010 10:52 am ET

north korea greece final of course

Antonio   May 25th, 2010 11:20 am ET

Regardless of who it is, it will be one of the teams that struggles to make it through the first round. They will gain momentum as the competition progresses. Besides, everybody knows, or should know, that soccer is a game that everybody plays and Germany wins.

kahsi   May 25th, 2010 11:24 am ET

it will be Brazil, Argentina, Spain and England.

rainbow25   May 25th, 2010 1:31 pm ET

SPAIN is going to win, they have the best team!!!

Gianfranco   May 25th, 2010 2:15 pm ET

As an Italian I'd love to see Italy reach Brazil as a five time champion, but I seriously doubt it. Italians need a certain kind of come from behind against all odds stimuli that this year is just not there.

Spain has a great team, but they don't have the coolness of mind and unity of purpose required. Brazil is not as strong as it could be and Argentina has amazing players with the wrong captain (Maradona).

England could be the best contender. Capello is the only man in the world that could make these amazing, and amazingly conceited, players come together. It is time for them to reach for the top, 44 years after their home victory.

Ran   May 25th, 2010 2:35 pm ET

I would like to see the team that displays the most honest and most beautiful creative game to win.
In short: The Netherlands, Spain or Brasil.

Unfortunately The Netherlands and Spain go indeed for the soccor one wants to see. Scoring goals is a bonus... where Brasil does both.

But plse no, not Brasil again.

So a final betweeen Spain and the Netherlands and all the soccer fans will be pleased , no matter who of the two countries win, they both deserve it and are capable of doing so..

ZIcko   May 25th, 2010 2:53 pm ET

Who said: Brasil – it's only Kaka? You kidding me... If you don't know, who's Fabiano, Nilmar or Grafite i'ts your problem./// Of course Brasil gonna win the crown

jaap broeker   May 25th, 2010 6:20 pm ET

oh come on everybody, we all know that the netherlands will be the big winner this time. ( i'd say probably on a shoot out with argentina.) HAH!

Gurufootball   May 25th, 2010 6:39 pm ET

Remember Messi plays for Barcelona a Spanish team not for the national Spanish team. Spain are European champions and will do well, but I don’t think they will win.
Argentina with Messi will do well, better than getting to the world cup.
I think Brazil and Italy have their historical winning tradition which is a great boost but some of their players like Kaka are not at their best.
I don’t give any team from Africa, Asia, N & Central America or Oceania any chance of winning although Cote d’Ivoire & Cameroon can be a surprise.
Therefore I’m predicting that this final will be between Portugal and Argentina, with the 2 current best players in the world.

OCHIEZE THEODORE JIDEOFOR   May 25th, 2010 6:40 pm ET

No Doubt it will be NIGERIA to win this World Cup 2010.NIGERIA will play the finals with ARGENTINA the scores well be NIGERIA 3 and ARGENTINA 2, Argentina will score the first ONE goal, then Nigeria will equalizing the one goal and then 20mins later Nigeria will finally score the TWO winning goals.
which makes SUPER EAGLES OF NIGERIA the winner of the 2010 world cup. HURRAY ..........................

tom   May 25th, 2010 6:53 pm ET

Diego is an idiot but his idea of NOT choosing players that will compete on the field with Messi is nothing short of brilliant (probably not his idea). So watch Argentina play as a tight team and go far this time too.

Michael   May 25th, 2010 7:03 pm ET

It's samba time in world cup 2010. Brazil with the sensational kaka is the favourite but dont write off their neighbour argentina with the mercurial diego maradona as coach. the big question is whether he will play both milito and messi together. such a strike force has the potency to terrorise even the best defensive formulation. Brazil for the win but watch the argentines.

mineromundial   May 25th, 2010 7:06 pm ET

It's about time for Spain to win the World Cup.

Takele   May 25th, 2010 7:40 pm ET

I think ether spain or Brazil will be the
winer because, they have the best team & play lovey football!!!

Indeche james   May 25th, 2010 7:43 pm ET

I undoubtly put my bet on the SAMBA BOYS-BRAZIL are the red hot favourites just from the CONCAFA SUCCESS. They will be banking on EXPERIENCE.

christian etemike oghenemaro   May 25th, 2010 8:40 pm ET

while brazil and italy are the overwhelmimg favorites, there is no denying the chances of the spain, the netherlands and one of the six african representatives (nigeria and cameroun). england got their final selections wrong, argentina too are full of super misfits and lack tecnical balance while france and germany did not also get their selections right. portugal stand a chance with ronaldo but cannot win it. to be candit, this will be a very poor world cup owing to fatigue and injuries.

ayden   May 25th, 2010 8:59 pm ET

this will be an interesting world cup,but there will only be two teams who will make it to the final. my predictions are that Argentina and Netherlands make it. I think Argentina will also win it. I'm from the USA,but they still need more work.GOOD LUCK USA!!!

This year's cup is going to Argentina or Brazil.
Forza Italia :(

Pedro   May 25th, 2010 10:21 pm ET

Hey, remember this names: Humberto Suazo, Alexis Sánchez, Gary Medel, Fabián Orellana, Jorge Valdivia, Arturo Vidal, Claudio Bravo, Jean Boausejour.

Don't forget them, cause those r just some of the players that make history playing for CHILE, and qualyfied our country in 2nd place afetr Brazil and before Paraguay, and Diego's Argentina.

We'll keep writting a new stroy, we'll be the 2010 South Africa's best team.

Richard or Mac   May 25th, 2010 11:16 pm ET

Ivory Coast 3 Brazil 3. Final- after extra time....

mif991   May 26th, 2010 3:51 am ET

My team is Mexico, but I have to say Brazil, Spain, Italy, Argentina and Netherlands will battle it out for the trophy. Brazil will win it. Italy always wins ugly, but they know how to get it done.

Pendevous   May 26th, 2010 6:45 am ET

Spain has Messy, Villa, Iniesta, Fabregas, Xavi, Xabi Alonso, Sergio Ramos, Silva, Albiol, Puyol, and Casillas. Need I say more? :)

Adrian   May 26th, 2010 8:20 am ET

DENMARK ALL THE WAY!!!

ALi   May 26th, 2010 10:25 am ET

Spain or Brazil have the best chance.

RiSkO 777   May 26th, 2010 10:47 am ET

I believe this is spain's time in the sun...they always had a top side throughout the years but this time especially after winning euro 2008 I believe they can do it.

Brent   May 26th, 2010 10:49 am ET

My belief is that Spain, England & Holland have the best squads. However, do to there amazing world cup history, it's hard to deny that Italy and Brazil are contenders.

However, being an American I honestly think that the US have a strong chance. I haven't lived in the United States for 15 years, but I have been following football for a long time and have seen a huge improvement in our squad. It was no fluke we beat Spain & almost pulled off an incredible upset against Brazil! :)

The Best USA lineup is
GK: Tim Howard (Arguably the best GK in the EPL)
RB: Jonathan Spector
CB: Onyewu, Demerit
LB: Bocanegra (Even if he doesn't start CB, he is the best defender & is the captain)
RM: Donovan (MLS player of the year & clearly the star player in the US team)
CM: Bradley
CM: Clark
LM: Holden
ST: Altidore
ST: Dempsey (Key role in Fulham's Europa League success)

Garry   May 26th, 2010 12:24 pm ET

.. I think Brazil might win

ebenezer yeboah-ghana   May 26th, 2010 1:13 pm ET

Ghana will win the world cup 2010

GeNeEs   May 26th, 2010 1:14 pm ET

As a German I hope Multikulti Germany will get another star (3 x WC, 5x runner up). If not, my heart goes to "my" Nederland. Holland, Holland!

Don´t want the "Catenaccio Italians" as winners. England has a chance on the British Isles only, I think, especially when it comes to shoot out.

ebenezernimrod yeboah-ghana   May 26th, 2010 1:18 pm ET

Argentina will win the world cup 2010
brazil second

Hoffmann   May 26th, 2010 2:19 pm ET

Brazil! Why?
Out of the 11 players, Brazil has 7 best in the world:
The best goalkeeper: julio Cesar
The best defender: Lucio
The best right wingers: Maicon and Daniel Alves
The best midfielder: Kaka
The best forward combination: Robinho + Luis Fabiano
Agreed???

fer   May 26th, 2010 2:49 pm ET

brazil has the best forward combination??? come on!! Argentina has messi and higuain, the top two goalscorers in europe.

Angus Yeates   May 26th, 2010 2:54 pm ET

i'd love to see it go to a country that has never won it before, so i'm pulling for the spanish and dutch as they are the most likely of the non-winners. but to make it a true "world" cup i'm hoping for some good showings from some countries in continents that are not south america and europe. i would love to see australia do well after the poor refereeing they had in germany. or any of african nations (except ghana because of the aussies), north americans or asian. want to see a few of the lesser known countries in the final eight like 2002. i'm hoping for some big surprises and amazing football.

Nicolas Njoroge   May 26th, 2010 6:02 pm ET

Simple..... The best country NEVER to win the world cup...... The Netherlands.Plus Van Marwijk the Dutch Coach has been working on their achilles heel...Team Spirit. They will emerge tops thanks to a talented and very technically gifted squad without doubt. You can quote me on the 12th of July!

Machardo   May 26th, 2010 6:08 pm ET

After the world cup we will be talking about one player, Robson DeSouza. Brazil will win the world cup. Without Juan Roman Argentina will not have that midfielder to find Messi at will. Argentina have great forwards, but will be lacking in midfield. Robinho all the way and MVP.

Gurufootball   May 26th, 2010 6:24 pm ET

Argentina players were top scorers and players all over Europe. I can see them in the final.

Pedro Miranda   May 26th, 2010 8:34 pm ET

Even though I'm brazilian I will try to be neutral. I don't believe some of the teams mentioned above have any chance: USA, Australia, Greece, others. However if I were from these countries I would go for them, of course! In my humble opinion the strongest team out there is the Argentinean squad, followed closely by Italy's and Brazil's teams. I hope Brazil wins over there and here again in 2014 ( I will be there!!!) but I would say that Argentina has the best team overall despite Maradona's inefficiency as a coach. Best luck to all!

timotiss   May 26th, 2010 10:01 pm ET

brazil will win no doubt about that.

Ricardo   May 26th, 2010 10:33 pm ET

BRASIL! THE SKY IS THE LIMIT * * * * * *

BRASILIA WILL CARRY THE DAY IF NOT I BET MY KWACHAS ON SPAIN

spain are going to carry the world cup in southafrica 2010

rhymus   May 27th, 2010 4:37 pm ET

well, to win a world cup is a very difficult task, the only trick is to be a mentally strong side and also have a very strong bench.
i will pick Spain as a hot contender for the Title

Adriana Thames   May 27th, 2010 5:02 pm ET

SPAIN will win the world cup 2010!!

Joao C. De Melo   May 27th, 2010 5:07 pm ET

BRAZIL will do it!. The Brazilians will lift that beatifull trophy once again.

Hermann Meyer Kanaplei   May 28th, 2010 3:01 am ET

Champion: Spain
Vice Champion: Brasil
Third place: Germany

giovanni ventura   May 28th, 2010 8:11 am ET

Of course I would like nothing better than our U.S.-boys to schock the world, but if I were to make a realistic choice then I like either Holland or Ivory Coast: they both have excellent players that play on the best teams in Europe

Go U.S.A.!!!

marimba   May 28th, 2010 9:19 am ET

WM – 2010 : finale

Brasil vs. Germany
Deutschland wins in penalty-kicks after overtime.

Alex   May 28th, 2010 6:22 pm ET

As a brazilian i want to say that this world cup we ll not win. The next cup will be in Brazil and this was made for us to win in our country. We lost in 1950 and fifa wants that Brazil win in they home. Prob who will win in 2010 will be Argentina or Spain. See what im saying.... and remember in 2014.

hoffmann   May 28th, 2010 8:28 pm ET

messi and higuain vs luis fabiano and robinho;
what's the best forward?

Rodrigo   May 28th, 2010 8:40 pm ET

I'm definitely going to bet for Netherlands and Spain they do have the current best squads with tons of creative midfielders and great clinical strikers. Brazil, I like what Dunga is doing there and they are also a strong horse in this race. England injury plagued team won't make it cause offensively they are too dependent of Rooney's skills same case with struggling Portugal and it's dependency on Ronaldo's explosiveness and speed. Argentina and France are all ready been self destructed by their Manager's decisions; even though Argentina has the best strikers in the world nowadays, but I think Maradona's strategic ability and "judgment" is what will bring 'hem down; I'm still shocked by the non inclusion of Cambiasso and Zanetti. Italy... what 's to say about them?? mmm let's face it they don't have the same strength they did 4 years ago. As to Germany they sure are going to miss Ballack well in terms of strikers I think is going to struggle for goals, mainly cause Klose and Gomez warmed the bench most of the season; Podowlski hasn't been bright this season!!! Huge Mistake not bringing Kuranyi to the squad

paul   May 28th, 2010 10:58 pm ET

Apparently i simply believe Brazil is going to lift up the trophy because they have the best and most experience players

paul   May 28th, 2010 11:05 pm ET

Brazil is going to lift up the trophy because they have the best and most experience players in the world

marcos from Brazil   May 29th, 2010 12:42 am ET

Yes I agree that Argentina has the best forward combo but I also have to say that they have the worst coach EVER in Diego Maradona and this simple fact will sink the team. As simple as that if I was an argentinian I would b crying... For real!

k. salim   May 29th, 2010 7:52 am ET

Argentina they have good pleayer and best pleayer in uropen and good coach diego maradona the will take a cup

muhammed dibbasey   May 29th, 2010 9:39 am ET

Ivory coast will win this world cup 4 sure

Predictor   May 29th, 2010 10:50 am ET

I think Holland will win the world cup, they have the best players at the moment. WHen the Dutch coach will let the Super Four play in one team ( Robben, Sneijder, Van Persie and vande Vaart) and they wont get injured, they will make every defense complete insane.

Achilles heel: defense

Runner up Argentina

Abdullah Balushi   May 29th, 2010 11:13 am ET

NO doubt 100% Argentina leadindin by two legends MARADONNA and MESSI this cup should be for Argentina

aj   May 29th, 2010 2:38 pm ET

Netherlands, no doubt.

Arthur Kastanje   May 29th, 2010 3:23 pm ET

I am Dutch and have hopes but we don't have the history and that is important in a World Championship. When you play Italy in the semi's than Italy has something which you don't have: a few stars on their shirt. Personally I think that Argentina has the perfect story to become the champion: they are the underdog because of their poor qualifing serie but they do have the worlds best player and more importantly: A few starts on their shirt. Italy is another of my favorites because the rules in nowadays football are still in their favour. No team can play on a result as they can, and as long as the rules favour defending teams, (i won't go into detail) they will be ready for another final. Spain is the best on all fronts and a pleasure to watch, but will they have the stemina to play good till the end? I hope so.... Africa? They have the opportunity to proof themselves now!

donika gashi   May 29th, 2010 4:54 pm ET

germany is the best team but withought michael ballack i dont trust to much in that team all the best for you

Martino Man   June 2nd, 2010 4:25 am ET

In our heart of hearts, MOST of us – even this U.S. citizen – are rooting for Bafana Bafana, symbol of South Africa and reconciliation. If not the host country, then we root for Honduras. Cheers to one and all.

A. Zudervici   June 2nd, 2010 5:48 am ET

I think (hope) that the final will be Spain vs. The Netherlands, which 'Oranje' will win on either one goal difference or by penalties.

The reason why? Because once it has to be their time. After the lost finals of 1974 and 1978 and the tragic loss in the 1994 quarter finals en the 1998 semi-final a new generation of talented players has risen at the Dutch Horizon. With Stars as Van der Vaart, Sneijder, Robben, Van Bommel and Van Persie and Talented youngsters as Affelay, Elia and Van der Wiel the Dutch have again a dream team capable of winning the cup!

jlo   June 2nd, 2010 10:44 am ET

Brazil should win the World Cup, not just Africa 2010 but any World Cup. After all, they are the only country to win the cup SIX TIMES.

But, don't write off the Italians and the Germans.

Other teams looks fancy but may not have the "QUALITY".

Brazil, Italy, Germany are World Cup Champions.

Hurricane Andrew   June 2nd, 2010 12:29 pm ET

Go Bafana Bafana-"BOYz 2 Men"

Leeds United (Rob)   June 2nd, 2010 3:48 pm ET

It will not be Brazil this time. I don't think they can do it this time. Holland and Argentina have good squads but will not quite make it either. England and Germany are in with a chance if they play well but the favourites have to be Spain.

Come On England!!

I STRONGLY BELIEVE ENGLAND WILL WIN D WORLD CUP,

Martin   June 5th, 2010 1:01 am ET

Everyone is really quick to dismiss Maradona. Huge mistake.

He is not a bad coach, he was given an obliterated team with 1 year to prepare it.

It's easy beating on Maradona, but, as usual, he will have the last laugh.

vincent   June 5th, 2010 10:09 am ET

i think Brazil is capable of winning because It got what it takes to do so.Generally they are the best.u see even selecting their national team poised a big challenge to the head coach,Dunga.

MEMO   June 6th, 2010 1:59 pm ET

I Think SPain will beat Brazil in the Final and win the CUP

johannes heimpel   June 6th, 2010 4:24 pm ET

FINAL MATCH BRAZIL MEXICO BRAZIL WINS

Herry   June 6th, 2010 8:05 pm ET

I love the game and think France will lift the trophy. Think about it They played lousy in the qualifiers and even played handball (Henry). If they find there game again during the world cup 2010, they will go far. Most of the French players have African roots and will have home advantage in asouth afrika.

olagie idodo   June 6th, 2010 8:34 pm ET

I see England, Spain and two African teams in the semis.
possibly Ivory coast and Nigeria.

Joris   June 6th, 2010 10:50 pm ET

Orange colours will be raised again in South Africa. The team that broke France's and Italy's back 2 years ago has only gotten better, and better. And even more eager.

Dream final: Spain against the Netherlands, for everyone that enjoys magic in football knows that those two teams have the most of it.

criolla   June 6th, 2010 11:13 pm ET

USA, they are young, in the US they are ignored because Comertials can not play like for the other sports, but they play with their hearts, TRUE SPORTS.

Mark Long   June 7th, 2010 7:50 am ET

New Zealand will nick this one I'm sure.

Mazuba   June 7th, 2010 8:18 am ET

there 's a reason why the world cup has only been won by a handful of teams, and frankly speaking i don't think that's gonna change anytime soon.
to begin with, the winner wont come from Africa or Asia or North America. Secondly, sum of the usual favorites such as Italy and France just don't have decent teams or managers!for all their usual unrealistically high expectations the English just don't have enough depth(as usual) whilst Portugal's just not good enough. That just leaves Argentina(novice coach with a good bunch of players if not a team) ,Brazil(pragmatic and effective team without a plan B) ,Germany(efficient team with leaky defense),Holland(very good team but always choke in big tournaments) and Spain(most talented bunch but lack mental strength). One of these five will win it though and they will beat one of the others in the final. As for surprises, i would look forward to teams like USA,Mexico,Chile,Paraguay and either Ivory Coast and Ghana. As for the hosts, well, lets just hope that for FIFA's sake they at least make it out of the first round!

Maaji idris   June 7th, 2010 1:21 pm ET

Will give it to SPAIN on strength and depth of their team.

Ifeanyi Agukwu   June 8th, 2010 12:53 am ET

tkfc   June 8th, 2010 12:11 pm ET

Spain or Brazil the teams to beat!

dave ernesta   June 8th, 2010 12:20 pm ET

Victor   June 8th, 2010 2:30 pm ET

The netherlands will win this year. They have the best player and had the best qualifiing tournament and they will now win teh entire world cup.

Gregg   June 8th, 2010 4:34 pm ET

i might sound a crazy but i trully think its time for the USA to win the world cup..

both   June 9th, 2010 1:08 am ET

I hope that the only Brazil win this game, because most of them is a good player on the field.

Fabiola Ribeiro   June 9th, 2010 10:39 am ET

Brazil will win the world cup in Africa, no doubt about it, and I will be watching it from Paris!!!

Andreas   June 9th, 2010 11:14 am ET

Argentina doesn't stand a chance! Their coach has no strategy, has never fielded the exact same team twice, and apparently doesn't want to run the risk of allowing Messi to be successful and eclipse him. He was a talented player–he is a lousy coach.

tkfc   June 9th, 2010 11:32 am ET

Any team with Messi in must have some chance, even though his teammates may not be of the same calibre as him.

Navi Eleo   June 9th, 2010 6:46 pm ET

Holland, bright orange deserve to win ones the big cup!!!!

Rafa   June 9th, 2010 7:04 pm ET

Lawrence   June 9th, 2010 9:02 pm ET

Oh Come on.... is this even a question. Holland of course will win...hands down!

J   June 10th, 2010 1:37 am ET

My best bet is on Brazil to win. But I will be very excited if an African team can win. On that note Cameroon and Cote d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast) have the best chances of advancing.

mario d.   June 10th, 2010 2:15 am ET

I hope referees do not favor brazil like they always do. With that said, may the best team win.

Aaron B   June 10th, 2010 6:31 am ET

To many of you are hooked on what Brazil used to be. They used to be amazing but are no longer. Spain, or Holland will be raising the cup.

graziela   June 10th, 2010 12:06 pm ET

Brazil!! Brazil!!

G   June 10th, 2010 3:50 pm ET

Mind my words (and look to history to support it). One of Argentina or Brazil will be in the final but not both. From those ARG has the highest chances (in my personal opinion ARG will win). The second team to reach the final will be european although it's hard to say because the race in the continent is wide open.

andrea   June 10th, 2010 5:44 pm ET

just brazil.....unfortunately........maicon julio cesar lucio kaka luis fabiano robihno......no way....however i hope that italy will do a good mondial

matheus   June 10th, 2010 7:47 pm ET

Not sure if brazil will win, but they will give a good fight... And even if people say we dont have that many stars in our team, in Brazil, lots of fans believe we lost the last world cup because of too many stars who weren't motivated enough. Brazil has many good players who dont play internationaly, and are very motivated to play in World Cup, because thats where they will be discovered... I dont think leaving ronaldinho or some other "stars" was necessarily a bad decision. In brazil, we lost a magnificent coach (2002) because of criticism before (brazilians criticized him so much during the World Cup, that he said he would never coach brazil again... PS hes the one who coached portugal in 2006), I think we should trust our coach's decision...

Ramnath   June 10th, 2010 8:14 pm ET

This time its gonna be Brazillllll

steve   June 10th, 2010 10:20 pm ET

I think spain or brazil will win the world cup as long as the referres are fair in the game. I think this year there might be a surprise winner also.

Camila   June 10th, 2010 10:23 pm ET

BRAZIL or ARGENTINA

Tigershark8   June 11th, 2010 12:08 am ET

England will beat Spain in the Final. USA will upset one of the big teams, probably Germany or Portugal.

dexcom   July 10th, 2010 11:56 pm ET
